Trading In The Old Clunker

But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:20-24 (NKJV)

Imagine driving a model "T" Ford, vintage 1929.  I'm not talking about a complete restored body on a newer drive train, with all the creature comforts we take for granted either, but an actual 80 year-old car with 200 cubic inch four-cylinder engine producing 40 horsepower, no air conditioning, no power steering, no integrated phone system or reclining seats.

So you've been driving this car for years and years until one day, you go to the car lot and you trade it in on a new car with all the modern bells and whistles. But you make this deal understanding you can no longer drive the old oneyou have to let it go.  So you make the deal, and take home a fantastic new machine; one allowing you to do things you were never capable of doing before.

After purchasing your new car would you consider going back later after closing at the car lot and break into your old Model "T" so you could take it out for a spin?  Would you really want to go back to the old way of commuting once you had experienced the new car?  Probably not!  And besides, you traded in the old clunker and it is no longer yours.

Well, this is sort of what it is like when we accept Christ and become "Born Again."  We have been given a new nature and a new life, and who we were before is no longer an option.  Neither are the old ways of doing things.  It is time to get rid of those old sinful habits, those old ways of doing things even those things deemed acceptable by society.  This means we cannot sneak back to take a joy ride by participating in the sinful things we used to do regularly. We need to remember Christ paid for these transgressions in full, and our body belongs to Him now (1 Cor. 6:19).

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

Even though our physical body is still being subjected to progressive deterioration after our being born again in Christ Jesus, our minds are to be rejuvenated daily with God's Word.  In doing this, we will be transformed with the renewing of our minds (Rom. 12:2).  The by-product is we will see things differently and will desire and act differently as well.

We have a responsibility to "put off the old man," and we are told to "be renewed in the spirit of your mind" we are to "put on the new man."  It is important for us to know we cannot just make a conscious decision and determine to act differently and expect change, because we are incapable of doing this without God's empowerment of the Holy Spirit (John 15:5). We will eventually fail, causing our countenance to drop and our attitudes to become dejected or pessimistic about becoming a better person.

I want to encourage you today to take the proper active steps to put off anything you know to be wrong.  Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit so you can be empowered to walk in truth.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Ephesians 4:20-24 what are we to put off as believers in Christ Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you found yourself still doing some of the things that you have asked forgiveness for?

APPLICATION: Get right with God, and get rid of those things you know to be sinful.  Don't compromise; allow God to clean out your closet of things you have been hiding away.

Father, thank You for Your forgiveness and mercy upon my life.  Help me to get rid of those old lifestyle patterns I have become accustomed to.  I choose to lay any and all of these things down at your feet this day, and I would ask You to deliver me from them, and empower me to change my actions so I might be more like You.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
