Are You Attempting to Earn Salvation?

Are You Attempting to Earn Salvation?

Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, Romans 4:4-5 (NKJV)

Because of the way we have been raised, we are pronged to believe that we must earn our salvation, and our love from God. Some views are skewed at best as they look at God as Dad coming home from work. They think that He will find out what theyve been up to in His absence. Hopefully, theyve been good, and they have done enough chores and we will be given a reward. Not only does God justify people apart from works but he does so contrary to what they deserve.

If our living a good life or doing works for God, such as witnessing to others could earn us anything, then it would mean that God is in debt to us. It would mean that God would somehow owe us salvation, and that we have some how earned something in return for our actions. But this is not biblical, and it is not true. We have earned nothing, nor can we earn anything from God. And God is a debtor to no man. We should actually know that we are the ones in debt to God, we owe Him our very lives.

God was so gracious that he gave us everything that we have; even our faith to believe in Him is a gift.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithand this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

So salvation is free by grace, and not of works lest anyone boast. It is a free unmerited favor from God.

So what is our part in this?

We must have the faith to believe and accept this gift.

So then Scott, youre telling me that I must add something to His grace then?

No, I am telling you that the faith is the method or medium by which grace starts to work. And, we are told that even that faith is not of ourselves; it, too, has been given to us.

You see, faith is not something that we can produce; it is simply our trustful response that is itself evoked by the Holy Spirit (God). Otherwise, we would claim or misinterpret that we contributed in some way to our own salvation. Remember Christian; it would be in our nature to boast about adding or doing something to receive some sort of credit for being forgiven. This is pride, and this is what took Lucifer down.

The entire process of salvation comes from nothing that we have done. The works-based acceptance that so many false beliefs and religions stress upon those who follow them are never a part of the process of salvation according to Gods Word-they are simply man made additions and rules packed into their Religion. These works that we do should be in response to the free gift of salvation. We should be so grateful for what we have been given that we want to give back and be a part of the giving to others who are in need.

I want to encourage you today; go out and give because God gave to you. Let your work be a way of saying thanks Dad for all that You have done. You dont have to earn His love, His grace, His favor, or His acceptance; you just have to accept it. It is then, that He will write it upon your heart to share with others, and then it will be up to you whether you will keep it for yourself, or freely give it out to others. I want to encourage you to give each and every day freely. Its really got nothing to do with work, because it is a blessing.

STUDY QUESITON: What does Romans 4:4-5 tell us about those who simply believe in Jesus verse those who attempt to work?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are You sharing what God has freely given to you, or are you keeping it to yourself?

APPLICATION: dont let your inhibitions keep you from sharing the Gospel. It isnt about being politically correct or popular, its about allowing God to do what He wants through you, and into the lives of others.

Father, Thank You for Your free gift. I accept and receive it today, and it is my desire to share it with others. Bring others into my life this very day and give me the words and the ability to share in love. May they see You in me and be drawn to You. May Your son be glorified in all that I do, for I ask this in His precious name, amen&

    Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
