Seeking This World - Straying From God
This is what the Lord says: "What did your ancestors find wrong with me that led them to stray so far from me?" Jeremiah 2:5 (NLT)

It seems like just yesterday when an older man was handing me my high school diploma on stage.  The world was my oyster; life was all ahead of me, and there were no boundaries as to what I could do or accomplish.  Well, it is only 33 years later, and I have realized there are, in fact, boundaries, and there are also limits (thanks body).  But one thing has not changed; life is still ahead of me.  Not just here on earth in this temporary tent known as my body (2 Cor. 5:1,4), but even more exciting is I have an eternal life to spend with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, along with every person who accepts Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.

As I think back on the wandering path my life has taken I realize my journey has allowed me to experience many different places, events, people and things - some good and some bad, but they all make up my journey.   God has used all of them to shape me into who I am and what I believe today.  Simply put, God has used all of them for good.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

One of the things I can look back upon and see clearly is how busy my life has been.  Busy can be either good or bad depending on what we are busy attempting to do.  For instance, we can all become legitimately busy just trying to take care of the needs of our family and ourselves. We may be tempted to think we are the provider - not God. When this happens, God can be put on the backburner until we have more time for Him.

We can also get busy when we get tempted into living for the things of this world.  We can be tempted to think we need to have certain things because we see others have them, and we can get caught up into placing an improper emphasis on obtaining these possessions.  Again, God can be put on the backburner because we choose not to make time for Him.

When we place God behind the list of the other things in our life, we are dishonoring Him and we are not prioritizing our life properly.  Soon we are suffering because we have no relationship with Him.   Without God's protection, wisdom and empowerment of the Holy Spirit our families will be sifted like wheat from Satan and his emissaries (cf Luke 22:31).  When we choose to put other things ahead of God in our heart we will find other things eating away at our lives like cancer - things such as, divorce, drug use, alcoholism, pornography, backbiting, anger, gossip, slander and many other sins.  We have become spiritual stray cats.

Thankfully God is faithful and He will remind us of our Lord - how we once loved Him in simplicity and desired to meet with Him.  And as we bow our head and ask for forgiveness, it will be like a Father wiping away the tears of a child, giving them a hug, and saying, "I missed you, and I love you.  It's going to be alright now."

God is good!  Amen?

Hey, maybe you can relate to getting too busy and straying a bit by putting other things ahead of your time with God.  I want to encourage you today.  Let's place God at the center of our lives.  Let's get Him involved in every decision, in every choice, and in every thought.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Romans 8:28 how many things in our life does God work together for good for those who love Him?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you found yourself becoming too busy because you are attempting to acquire, or achieve things you really don't need?

APPLICATION: Seek the Lord for His guidance and leading for your life.  Ask yourself, Am I focused on eternal goals, or ones grounded in the dirt of this world?

Father, thank You for Your forgiveness, Your mercy, and Your grace in my life.  Teach me all You want me to learn today, and guide me in all understanding of Your Word.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
