A Healthy Marriage By Faith
Resurrecting a Dead Marriage

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? Matthew 19:5 (NKJV)

Faith is a powerful thing.  We can see a great example of this face as Jesus told His disciples, "if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you" (Matt. 17:20).   A small amount of faith can do so much as it releases the power of God to do His will within the life of the one who believes.  Again, we can see a great example of this as a woman who had a bleeding disorder was healed as she simply touched the hem of Jesus' robe in faith (Mark 5:27-34).

We are saved and given the free gift of eternal life from God by grace through our faith in Jesus (Eph. 2:8-9).  In his letter to the Roman Church the Apostle Paul speaks of this gift when he wrote about Abraham's faith, "...God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did..."(Rom. 4:16-18),

Abraham believed God's promise to make him the father of a great nation, and in his seed all the nations of the earth were to be blessed (Gen. 22:18).

Q:    So what made Abraham's faith in this promise so great?

It was because Abraham and his wife were well beyond childbearing age.  God had called those things which do not exist as though they did (Rom. 4:17) He had spoken life where there was none.  So Abraham contrary to any real hope of having a child put his hope in God's promises, and as a result God blessed him accordingly with his son Isaac.

This same principle applies to us today.  We were once dead in our sin, and we have placed our faith in God's promise of eternal life.  But it doesn't stop here - this promise applies to every aspect of our life where God has made us a promise.  We are to believe in His promises and walk in faith being faithful to do our part.

Let's use a failing marriage for an example.  There are many failing marriages throughout the nation including many Christian marriages.   Many of these are perceived to be a dead relationship by one or both parties in the relationship, but the marriage can be raised to life through God's miraculous power.

Q:    How can a seemingly dead marriage be raised to life?

By faith! Each person in the relationship plays a vital role.   If both parties are committed to seeking and abiding in God's will for the marriage they will succeed, regardless of what has transpired.  It comes down to whether each person wants to submit to God's will - doing what He wants and walking in faith, rather than following their own personal feelings.

Hey, maybe you can relate to having a rocky relationship in your marriage - Maybe you're being tempted to pull the plug or retreat through separation.  If this is you today, I want to encourage you to seek the Master Physician.  Seek the One who calls those things that don't exist as if they do.  God will speak life into your marriage if you let Him take full control, and He will transform you, enabling you to do your part.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 19:5 what happens once two people are married?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you experienced the temptation to give up on your marriage?

APPLICATION: Never quit doing your part in your marital relationship.  Seek God's will for what He wants you to do.  Believe in His healing power and place your hope in His abilities to transform the marriage.

Father, thank You for Your amazing grace, love and forgiveness in my life.  I know it is Your desire for us to imitate these same characteristics of Agape love and to show others grace, love and forgiveness.  Help me to remember this when the enemy tempts me to do otherwise.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
