Spiritual Chia Pet

When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say. Luke 12:11-12 (NIV)

I dont know if youre old enough to remember seeing that Chia Pet commercial back in the 70s. I think that theyre still available at various stores. For those who dont know what Im talking about, theyre little pottery animals made of clay that transform into little green pet plants. You simply soak the clay animal and then spread the seeds that are like a paste of water and seeds all over the little chia figurine. Within 3-5 days it should begin to grow. And soon you will have this little animal with green growth all over it, as it will just thrive in the elements that are provided such as good soil, healthy seed, and plenty of water.

I think that we can look at this and pretty much pattern our spiritual life after this process too. I guess you could say that we should be spiritually chia pets. Think about the process I just explained above, and how we can apply it to ourselves. God starts with a basic shape when making us. And our bodies are made from the same 17 elements that make up dirt. So, basically, we are the clay. And God is the master potter, shaping us to just the perfect shape that He has in mind. Isaiah identifies with this truth.

Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

Jesus tells us in the book of Luke that His Word is planted in us and He refers to His Word as the seed.

This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Luke 8:11 (NIV)

And then Jesus explains the last part of this parable, and it is a very important part. He tells us that the condition of the soil will result in whether the seed sprouts, whether is grows, whether it is choked out by other things that are in the soil such as weeds, or whether it will grow as intended because the condition of the soil is healthy for growing.

"Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Luke 8:12 (NIV)

"Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. Luke 8:13 (NIV)

"The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by lifes worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. Luke 8:14 (NIV)

"But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. Luke 8:15 (NIV)

I guess the way that I read this, it is pretty simple, we should be reading the Bible, the infallible, inerrant Word of God because this is where we get the seed. And we should be allowing God to transform our weed infested, rocky, and thorny hearts to prepare us so that His Word will have the proper soil; a good heart, and a place to call home. We should look like Spiritual Chia Pets if we do this right. When people look upon us, they should see great spiritual growth because we have been covered with Gods seed that has been planted within our lives. And Jesus will provide the water that leads to eternal life.

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. John 7:38 (NIV)

I want to encourage you today to allow God to continue to shape you and plant all the seed that he desires as you study His Word. Lets see how long it takes before those around us see the growth in our lives.

STUDY QUESTION: What (4) types of soil are referred to in Luke 8?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Which soil represents your spiritual life?

APPLICATION: Let God prepare the soil of your heart today, and start reading His Word daily.

Father, Thank You for shaping me the way that You have. Help me today to prepare the soil in my heart. Show me the things that I put too much emphasis on, and the things that I need to get rid of in my life. Help me to have good soil, and help for the seed that You have sown to grow. In Jesus precious name, amen&
