More Than Tempting

More Than Tempting
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. Luke 4:1-2
Jesus was in the desert 40 days and nights and was tempted by the Devil. I used to think that he was tempted three times as we see in the following verses. As you read Mark 1:13 it just says he was tempted 40 days. How many temptations did Jesus go through in those 40 days? Who knows? Obviously the three that are written out are the important ones for us to have.
Jesus defended his position with scripture. How important it is for us to have scripture in our hearts. That in those times of temptation The Spirit of God can draw upon them in our hearts.
How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! Psalms 119:9-11
I know I need to memorize more scripture so there is more there to draw upon.
Understanding the Temptation of Jesus is tremendous help for me when I am being tempted. Is being tempted a sin? No. The temptation itself is not a sin. Its what happens next that could get us in trouble. Before Christ there is an expectation for a non-believer to fall subject to that sin just because it is all they know and by the worlds standard it is fully acceptable. But for those who are in Christ Jesus we have two things that work for us.
1.Jesus, our savior whom we follow, did not give in or fall subject to sin. He lived a perfect life.
2.We are free from the law of sin and death.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2
What a great relief that we are no longer condemned, and it is all because of Jesus. We dont have to feel like we are defeated in temptation. In fact we can stand temptation in the face and say NO! We can walk away in His strength.
There is one other part of Luke 4:1 that is important. He was filled with the Spirit. The Spirit of God in us is that strength.
There is no other feeling like the feeling of defeating temptation. It is the feeling of the power of God inside me running through my body.
Let us stand up a defeat temptation in the power of Jesus
