The Goodness of God

Or do you despise the riches of His goodness&? Romans 2:4 (NKJV)

How could we possibly despise the riches of His goodness? How could we hate, loath or spurn the God of the universe sharing His love with someone?

Believe it or not, it can happen, and it is easier than what you think. Here are (3) ways in which this might happen.

1.We can despise the Goodness of God when it is being praised by others.

We can see an example of this as King David brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. He was so excited that as he was entering the city, he was dancing about, praising God, and his wife saw him and she despised him for his joy unto the Lord.

As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart. 2Samuel 6:16

Davids wife suffered for her despising of Gods Goodness by being made barren. We, too, can become barren in our soul and fruitless in our spiritual walk if we despise the goodness of God when others are praising it. We can do this when we mock it, make fun of it, or when we dont participate in it.

2.We can despise the Goodness of God when it is extended to others.

We can see David echo this feeling in Psalm 73.

Truly God is good &But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no pangs in their death, But their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish. When I thought how to understand this, It was too painful for me Psalms 73

Listen Christian, these people are the ones who are sinning. Let it be their sin, not yours. If God wants to extend His grace to them, then why are you so angry? We should pray that their eyes would be open, and that they would feel Gods loving kindness upon their hearts.

3.We despise the Goodness of God when it is exploited within ourselves.
Check out an example of this in Luke.
Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, For three years now Ive been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and havent found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil? Sir, the man replied, leave it alone for one more year, and Ill dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down. Luke 13:6-9

God is patient, this is true, but I am actually despising His goodness whenever I think, Well, Im getting away with my sin. I dont see any bad things happening to me, so I guess Ill keep on doing what Im doing. Hey, maybe God doesnt notice or even care. Maybe what Im doing doesnt even bother Him&.
This is not the case! We shouldnt be using His goodness to write a blank check for the payment of our sin. His Goodness should have us turning from our transgressions and seeking to know Him better.
    Hey maybe you or someone you know is going through this right now, and you are thinking;

The Lord has been good to me; He has dug around my sinful roots, and I have been fertilized with His Word. God has taken care of me in so many ways, and yet, I have not turned from a certain sin in my life. I have written a blank check on His Loving Kindness, and His Goodness.

Hey, if that is you, dont wait to be cut down like the unproductive fruit tree. Let God into your heart and into your life, and watch the growth.

STUDY QUESTION: How did God deal with the fruit tree that wasnt doing what it was intended to do?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you despise Gods goodness in the lives of those you know?

APPLICATION: Let God come into your heart and search for anything that would raise itself up against His goodness in anothers life.

Father, Thank You for Your Goodness, and You provision for my life, and the lives of those whom I know. Lord, I trust that You are in control of all of these things, and I place my faith in You, that You will do what is needed for the betterment of all involved. Help me to continue to see things in light of Your word rather than with my views. In Jesus precious name, amen&
