Spiritual Bulimia

Spiritual Bulimia
Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. Luke 8:13 (NIV)
There is a condition that runs rampant throughout the fashion industry, and it affects 100s of thousands of women throughout the world who are influenced by fashion magazines and Hollywood celebrities. It is called Bulimia. This is an eating disorder that causes a condition in which bouts of overeating are followed by under eating. It is associated with depression and anxiety.
This binge and purge pattern is done in an attempt to become something that the person was not intended to be, and it usually leaves those who have become victim emotionally and physically destroyed. Much counseling and proper care must go into the person who has made a pledge to regain a healthy self-perspective and a proper eating regiment.
As many people as this disease has destroyed physically, it pails in comparison to the spiritual twin that shares its characteristics. I call this twin Spiritual Bulimia. Although Spiritual Bulimia doesnt exist by scientific or medical terms, I believe that it is a huge killer of ones spiritual life and I think that we have all come in contact with it.
An example would consist of a person hearing the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, and accepting Him as their Lord and Savior. An insatiable appetite would follow this for the Word of God. Church attendance and bible study are a must and the new convert cant seem to get enough of the spiritual Manna that God gives freely to all who earnestly seek Him.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5 (NKJV)
At some point a schedule or a relationship change for the believer can cause a disruption in the his or her study and worship time and before they know it, as fast as they became infatuated with the Lord, they now become too busy to find the time to seek Him. One might even see this within their own life and not think it to be too big a deal, after all, if anyone were to ask them, they would probably stand up for their belief and tell those who ask, that they believe very much in God and in Jesus as Lord and Savior. But the relationship has stalled and the effects of spiritual malnutrition start to take their toll, and unfortunately their behavior does not validate their claims of belief. Inevitably the old ways of the flesh creep back in and the bondage of sin takes back that which was once freed.
Another example of Spiritual Bulimia would be for a Christian to study and read the Word of God each and every day, but as soon as they were faced with lifes difficulties and/or sin filled temptations, they would revert to their fleshly ways of handling them. This could be a result of simple peer pressure because of the people they have chosen to associate with and places with which they choose to frequent. Simply put, they have spit out the word that they had eaten earlier and it doesnt stay within them long enough to properly provide nutrition.
We need to think about how we take in Gods Word each and every day. Make it a point to eat regularly and allow time for your meal to sink in and digest. Eat small regular meals in lieu of larger ones that are intended to make up for missed meals. There is no substitute for a good diet and regular exercise. With all the trials and temptations that we are called to face, there will be plenty enough exercise, so we need to be well fed so we can properly fuel our minds during these times.
    Dont Bonk! Start eating&
John 21:17& Do you love Me? And he said to Him, Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You. Jesus said to him, Feed My sheep. John 21:17 (NKJV)
STUDY QUESTION: According to Luke 8, what happens to those who dont have good root?
PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you suffered with bouts of Spiritual bulimia, or do you know of someone who is?
APPLICATION: Read the Word regularly. It is the way we maintain a healthy spiritual walk.
Father, Thank You for Your Word that You have given so graciously. I Thank You that I can read daily and that You provide health to my spirit. I praise You and I thank You in Jesus precious name, amen&
    Be Blessed, Scott
