Don't Go Too Far!

Don't Go Too Far!

"We will go three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He will command us." So Pharaoh said, "I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Intercede for me." Exodus 8:27-28 (NKJV)

"Don't go too far!"  This is what Pharaoh had to say to Moses after the 4th plague from God had devastated the Egyptian people.  Each time Pharaoh had been warned to let God's people go so they could worship Him in the desert.  If Pharaoh refused, then disaster was pending. Initially Pharaoh tells Moses to do their sacrifices right there in the land, but Moses tells him it would be an abomination to the Egyptian people.  He then gives in a little more when he agrees to let them go, but then adds, "Don't go too far."

Pharaoh knew God was real and yet he continued to fight Him - refusing to surrender his life and to follow Him wholeheartedly.  He even asks Moses to intercede for him in prayer to God.  I find the same thing happening today with people who also believe God is real - they believe in Him; they will even ask believers to intercede and pray for them, but they will eventually stop short with the same mentality Pharaoh had - not willing to go too far.

Satan likes this because he knows if he can get us to stop short then we will never experience the freedom God intends for us to have.  Even when we accept Jesus as Savior, Satan is there to entice us to not go too far.  He may say to us in our thoughts, "Hey you said the prayer, but you don't need to go to church..." Or perhaps he might say, "Hey you are a Christian, but you don't really have to read your Bible and pray every day..."

What Satan and his emissaries are really saying is the same thing Pharaoh said, "Hey I'll bargain with you, go ahead and go worship God, but don't go too far!  Don't get all caught up in being obsessed like all those religious fanatics - wanting to go to church all the time."   This is exactly how Satan gets every Christian distracted from being wholly surrendered to God - through compromise.

The next thing you know we are blending in with the rest of the unbelieving world - nothing distinguishing us from those who live for self. In fact, some may never know or suspect we are followers of Jesus Christ.

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. 1 John 2:3-6 (NKJV)

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to go further out in your walk with God.  Don't ever stop walking towards God and don't be like Lot's wife looking back with a longing heart for the old lifestyle (Gen. 19:26).  The old you is dead, and behold you are a new creature in Christ (2 Cor 5:17).

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 John 2:3-6 how can we be assured we truly know Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Have you experienced people who have let you know you are too far out there in your walk with God?

APPLICATION:  Hang on tight to your relationship with God and He will hang on tight to you.  It is the most loving thing you can do for everyone who shares your life, as you become a living lighthouse to those who are out in the stormy seas of Satan.

Father, thank You for being a loving father and a faithful friend.  Help me to continue to get deeper into Your word, and to understand everything You want for my life.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
