Walking Worthy Out of Love

Walking Worthy Out of Love

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, Ephesians 4:1 (NKJV)

I don't know about you, but I tend to respond in a positive way to the people who have shown me kindness or love.  I remember growing up as a child -  if I knew someone truly cared for me it usually changed my attitude towards how I acted towards him or her.  It's kind of like having a parent who has loved and nurtured you -  you tend to want to show them respect and do what is right and honoring to them.

This is exactly what we see Paul speaking about in the Book of Ephesians.  He had spent the first three chapters telling us many important truths.  Things such as,

  • We are told what God has done for us
  • We are told what God has given to us
  • We are told what God has provided for us

This is a pivotal for us as Christian believers because it gives us a proper perspective and a grateful heart with which to serve our lord.  Our attitude changes once we fully understand what God has done for us.  He has allowed Jesus to die so we might have a relationship with Him.  He has given us Himself the Holy Spirit to live within our bodies and to lead us in all understanding.  He has given us His Word to provide us with His knowledge and truth.  He has provided us with a way to come directly to Him through Jesus in prayer so we may communicate with Him.
Q:    How should this affect us as Christians?

A:    It should give us great peace and empower us to be more effective in our Christian walk.

Unfortunately, we are often tempted into believing the lies from Satan and this can make our Christian walk feel burdensome.  For example, we can be tempted to believe once we have accepted Jesus as Savior, we must now attempt to stand up against the devil's temptations, do many good works, and then hope we have done enough to be saved when we finally die - this is not what Scripture teaches.  Instead, we should view the truth of what God wants us to know from the Scriptures.  We can see the immense differences as outlined in the Book of Ephesians. For instance,
  • We already sit in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus because we have been saved by His Grace through faith, not of works lest anyone boast   (Eph. 2:6, 8-9).
  • Since we are saved, we are now to walk worthy of the calling to which we have been called (Eph. 4:1).
  • Because of our position and victory in Christ, we are to stand fast against the devil and his emissaries (Eph. 6:11-18).

When we were still sinners prior to our accepting Christ, we sat before our heavenly Father receiving His unmerited favor (Grace) as He chose to love us (Rom. 5:8).  As we received His free gift of salvation and now accept His love, we can begin to understand all He has done for us.  This in turn prompts us to begin to walk worthy of our calling.  We don't do this out of obligation -  we do it out of love because He first loved us.
We love Him because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19 (NKJV)

Q:    What does it mean to Walk worthy of our calling?

We are given an outline within Chapters 4-6 in Ephesians.
  • As Christian believers, we are to walk in unity (Eph. 4:1-16)
  • As Christian believers, we are to walk in purity (Eph. 4:17-5:18)
  • As Christian believers, we are to walk in harmony (Eph. 5:19-6:9)
  • As Christian believers we are to walk in victory (Eph. 6:10-24)

Hey Christian, it will be a great burden to try to live in such a way as to earn God's love trying to walk in a way outlined in Ephesians 4-6.  But when we fully understand everything He has already done; everything He has already given to us, and everything He has already provided, we will naturally want to walk worthy, and we will do it with a willing heart.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Ephesians 4:1, how does Paul ask us to live our lives?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Are you struggling in your Christian walk?

APPLICATION:  Take the time to read the first 3 chapters of Ephesians.  Pray first and ask God to show you what He wants you to see.
Father, I can clearly see what You have done for me by reading Your word, and I want to thank You.  Use me today to be a light unto others.  Empower me to be what You have called me to be.  Show me how to walk worthy of the calling You have for me Lord.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...
