Are You Spiritually Dead or Alive?

Are You Spiritually Dead or Alive?

This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. Ephesians 4:17-19 (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul was telling the Christians in Ephesus that they were no longer to walk as the rest of the gentiles were walking now that they had accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior. This is true for every new believer, we are a new creature in Christ and the old is now gone, so we are to walk as Christ walked. We are to abandon the former lifestyle, as we are to be imitators of God (See Ephesians 5:1).

When we were meandering around with no real eternal purpose before we were saved, we were ignorant and because of this, we did not see what God wanted from us, or what He had for us. And as a result, we had a tendency to live a life filled with all sorts of sin including lewdness, uncleanness, and greediness. The sad part of this is that we might have done this so often that it became a way of life, and there wasnt even guilt in our minds when we did it.

Pastor Chuck Smith shared a story about Dr. Donald Barnhouse, the classic preacher form a generation ago, who shared a message about the repercussions of sin, a young man approached him and said, I sin, but it doesnt seem to matter at all. Im not haunted by it. I dont get depressed about it. It doesnt bother me a bit.
Dr. Barnhouse looked at him and said, Tell me, son, what would happen if I dropped an eight-hundred pound weight on the body of a dead man? Would he feel it? Would he be in pain? Would it bother him?
Of course not, said the young man. Thats the point, said Dr. Barnhouse. If you dont feel the weight of sin, if its not heavy upon you, if its not having an impact on you, its because youre spiritually dead.

Today, many of our problems can be traced back to our fleshly nature to covet and to be greedy, as we seek what we want to allow us to live a life of comfort and excess. Not able to be content with the things that we have, we seek to acquire something else that will fill the emptiness for a short time until it too, becomes the next thing that we need to trade in or get rid of. It can be anything too, Cars, boats, motorcycles, businesses, homes and spouses.

And again the result can be a conviction by the Holy Spirit as we improperly place a higher the desire for the material things in life to fulfill a place that only God can fill. But what if you stop feeling the conviction, or you arent bothered by this sinful binge and purge lifestyle? What if the sin of excess doesnt cause you to be sickened and to repent? Well, Dr. Barnhouse has a theory on this and I have to say that I think that he is on to something.

I watch our world change with each passing day; I see our economy tighten up and the things that once took our hearts desire being stripped away. The created has been worshipped more than the creator, and it is sin, plain and simple. I pray that this weighs heavily upon our hearts, and I hope that we will be humble enough to turn to the Lord and lay our lives before Him as a living sacrifice.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the scriptures above, how can we be alienated from God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are there things that you would welcome God to strip from your life?

APPLICATION: Ask God to take everything out of your life that leads you further away from your relationship with Him. Dont hang on to anything that you know is causing you or someone close to you to stumble.

Father, please show me any and all things that you would want me to get rid of that are not drawing me closer to You. Help me to get rid of each and everyone of these things. I am sorry for anything that has caused me or someone else to stumble. In Jesus name, amen&

     Be Blessed, Scott
