Obedience And Faithfulness

Obedience and faithfulness

Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. There will be loud wailing throughout Egyptworse than there has ever been or ever will be again. But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any man or animal. Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. Exodus 11:5-7 (NIV)

Were going through the book of Exodus currently here at Wildwood Calvary Chapel and it has some of the most spectacular stories and some of the saddest ones as well. The scripture above is the recorded history of one of the saddest.

Pharaoh had been warned several times prior to this, and each time he would harden his heart towards God, and most of his people, the Egyptians would follow him. And as a direct result, they would face tribulation and wrath for no other reason than a prideful heart and unwillingness to obey Gods command.

Those who followed Moses leading and who were faithful to listen to what God asked of them were being spared. God had separated them just as He does darkness from light, and yet Pharaoh continued in his prideful rebellion. This time it would cost him and his family deeply as he would lose his son.

We can look back at the History as recorded in the Bible and we can learn valuable lessons from each situation as we glean wisdom and examples and then apply it to our lives. Or we can ignore it and completely rebuke the spoken Word of God, or simply pick and choose the few things that we agree with and neglect the rest because it doesnt line up with our hearts desires.

As I look upon this story, I see clearly that Moses was obedient to what God called him to do. And as a result, I see that God was faithful to see Moses through every test and provide everything that he and all those who followed, could possibly need.

It is the same with us today, as we determine within our hearts to do the will of the Lord, and remain obedient to His call upon our lives. He will see us through every tough time, and will provide everything we need. It is our faithfulness to being obedient that allows God to do His work on us, and then in us, and ultimately through us. And just as in the case of Pharaoh, there will be an effect upon the lives of those around us.

The people who followed both Moses, and Pharaoh made history and it has been recorded. Some have been examples of what to do, and some have been examples of what not to do. Ask yourself this question: What kind of history am I making with my choices and actions today? If someone were recording your history right now and it was to be read in 25-years, 5-years, or two-days from now, what impact would it have had on your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, or your very own spouse and children?

I want to encourage you today to be faithful to read your Bible daily. God will show you what he wants in, and for your life. Thats what He gave us His Word for. Let Him speak to you and then be obedient to what He has asked or commanded of you. Watch the blessing that will be poured out upon you and those you love, it will be your future testimony to others, and it will make for great History.

STUDY QUESTION: Can you see how God separated those who followed and those who didnt in the verses above?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Would you be willing to be obedient today to what God is asking of you?

APPLICATION: Read the Word daily. Find out what God is asking of each of us. Start in Matthew and make a commitment to read the New Testament this year. A couple of chapters a day, giving God a small amount of time back from what He has given you, will be greatly rewarded.

Father, Thank You for showing me what You want from me. Thank You for writing me a plan for my life within Your Word. Help me to understand what it is that You have intended to show me each day as I read and study the Bible. Help me to implement these changes in my life and help me to overcome any habits that threaten to stand in the way of these commitments. In Jesus Precious name, amen&

    Be Blessed, Scott
