Those People Next Door
Somebody's Watching You

And he departed from there and entered the house of a certain man named Justus, one who worshiped God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. Acts 18:7 (NKJV)

Have you ever really looked at the stickers on the various cars driving next to you?  They can say a lot about the person driving the vehicle - about their passion or interests or their likes and dislikes.  They can depict a favorite sport, team or pastime.  They can make a political statement, or say something funny, and some can just flat out be rude and vulgar.  Whether good or bad, these stickers not only can give a powerful testimony of the things we have interest in or are passionate about they can depict who we really are.

As in water face reflects face, So a mans heart reveals the man. Proverbs 27:19 (NKJV)

I think one of the most powerful witnessing tools we can utilize as Christians is to outwardly identify with our Savior Jesus Christ.  We do this when we become baptized in water as we declare Jesus is God.  We are saying, "He is my Lord, and I intend to follow Him and live in a way that reflects His ways." We, as professed believers can decide to sport various logos and emblems on our clothes and cars as well.  But if our actions don't line up with these Christian logos were sporting, or if the logos don't line up with our professed Christianity, we can leave people trying to reconcile our proclamation of being Christ followers to the reality of our being conformed to this world.

The bottom line is people are watching us, and they are paying attention to these details they want to know what makes us different.  We can see this very fact in a story in the Book of Acts about a man named Justus.  We are told that he was a man who worshiped God, his house was next to the Synagogue, and his actions very much lined up with his professed beliefs.  The ruler of the synagogue next to his home witnessed these actions and as a result this leader chose to believe on the Lord with his entire household.  One man living a true Christian lifestyle impacted not only another mans salvation, but his entire family and many more throughout the city of Corinth came to know Jesus as Lord (Acts 18:7-8).

As I read this story I cant help but asking myself some basic questions questions such as-

Q:    What are my neighbors saying when I drive up the street am I driving in a way that causes them to stumble?

Q:    What are my neighbors hearing from me next door?  What type of music am I listening to, and what type of conversations am I having?

Q:    Am I reaching out and attempting to connect with others, or am I content to be secluded?

Q:    Do others want to know Jesus because of the way I am living?

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to remember the Great Commission of sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ.  Remember, it is how we live that largely determines whether we are given a platform to speak into the lives of others.  Let's be good ambassadors so when our neighbors speak about those people next door, it will be God-honoring.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Proverbs 27:19, what can we learn about our own hearts desires?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What can your neighbors say about your Christian walk by simply looking at and listening to you?

APPLICATION: Ask God to fill you afresh with His Holy Spirit today.  Now seek to be a good witness with a life that reflects Jesus heart to serve others and to be selfless.

Father, Thank You for giving us Your Son as an example of how we should be living.  Father, forgive me for those times where I have failed to live in a way honoring to You.  Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit today and empower me to be more like Jesus.  I ask this by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
