You Are Free!

You Are Free!
The Emancipation Proclamation of Sin

Jesus answered them, Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. John 8:34 (NKJV)

When I think about slavery, I think about the Emancipation Proclamation Act of 1863 - about how it abolished it in the United States.   And yet there were some who even though were set free with this new law, they would continue to live as they had before because they didn't embrace the truth of their freedom.  I see a similarity in the way some Christians live their lives after being set free from the bondage of sin.

Slavery because of the pigmentation of skin was a sin and a gross injustice against all who suffered from it, and it cost many their physical lives.  But we must understand; slavery to sin in one's life is even a greater injustice because it kills both the body and soul and it doesn't discriminate based on any color and it affects all mankind.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)

Maybe we have made a profession of faith only to return the bondage and slavery to sin, or worse yet, we have never believed we were set free from this bondage to sin.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. Romans 6:5-6 (NKJV)
Q:    So as Christians why do we continue to live as slaves to sin when we have been told clearly by God, You're free from the bondage of sin!

Perhaps you have made a profession of faith in Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, and yet you have returned to the same lifestyle that you had prior to this commitment.  Perhaps its drinking with friends or doing occasional drugs; perhaps its having sex out of marriage or maybe it is racking up credit card debt.

Whatever it is - stop!  Seek the Lord for His guidance, and His strength and repent (turn from), this lifestyle.  We need to remember that God is bigger than any temptation or fleshly want that we will face, and we need to remember that He will give us the power to overcome the temptation to sin in our lives. Notice, I didn't say that He would stop the temptation to sin, but that He would help us overcome the temptation.

We must resist the devil and his temptations, and we can, once we have submitted ourselves to God and we utilize the power of His Holy Spirit within us.  Once we do this, the devil and his temptation will flee from us.

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (NKJV)

The Devil is the "father" of all lies and he will continue to attempt to fill our minds with the help of his emissaries. As he tempts us into filling our fleshly desires, he follows up with continual condemnation of our failure, and he leaves us in the very bondage of lies and sin that we were freed from.  This has been Satan's pattern since the fall of man, and it is the pattern of man's flesh in this world.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

We need to fill and feed our minds with the truth of God's Word; with the truth of the emancipation proclamation of our sin because as believers and followers of Christ we have been set free.  We need to think on these things, and keep them in our minds, as we meditate on what God has done for us and what He is doing in us.  We should always keep an eternal perspective daily, reminding ourselves of what is waiting for us, and of how short a time we are here on this earth.  Sin will lose its grip upon our life as we exert the power of the Holy Spirit and our freedom in Christ.

STUDY QUESTION: What does Romans 6:18 tell us about sin and slavery?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Have you been freed from sin only to get entangled into that lifestyle again?

APPLICATION: Stop conforming to the lifestyles of this world!  Feed your mind something healthy-we are what we eat.  Read your bible daily-pray before and after reading that God will show you what He wants you to see and retain for application in your life.

Father, I am sorry for those times I have returned to the very things that you have freed me from.  Help me to see clearly that these things are robbing me and those in my life of the blessings that You have intended to give.  Give me the Wisdom to implement what You have taught me, and to refrain from the temptations of the flesh.  I ask these things humbly in Your Son's precious name, amen...
