Fill'er Up!

Fill'er Up!

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)

In some previous devotionals titled, Get Plugged In and Unplugged, we have talked about the Holy Spirit.  We have looked at how we receive the Holy Spirit upon accepting Christ and becoming a new believer.  We talked about the Holy Spirit coming upon us with Power; enabling the believer to do whatever task God has called him or her to do.  Today I want to take a look at another aspect of the receiving the Holy Spirit for the service of God, and this is the responsibility to be filled up daily.

As we read Ephesians 5:18, we can clearly see that it is God's desire that we be filled with the Spirit.  And God, being our Heavenly Father, will be ready to give it to us abundantly as we seek Him for this fresh filling.

"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" Luke 11:13 (NKJV)

Asking is a very important part of receiving.  In James 4:2 we are told that we have not because we ask not, and it goes on to tell us that when we do ask, we all too often ask for the wrong things.  Its like a child asking for dessert all the time and never the healthy fruits and vegetables.  We should be asking for wisdom (James 1:5), and a fresh filling of God's Holy Spirit each and every day.

I think that too many Christian men and women are lacking the power of God's Spirit in their lives today simply because they have never asked.  They may not know about this available power, or they may simply forget to ask.  In 1 John 5:14-15 we are told if we ask anything according to God's will He hears us, and if He hears us, then we have the petitions that we desired of Him.

Q:    So how should we ask God - is there a proper way?

The answer is yes, there is a proper way, and that way is we must ask in faith.  If we ask God for anything, we must ask it in faith, we must believe that God has done it. We see this truth being given in the Book of James.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; James 1:6-7 (NKJV)

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1).  Faith is all the evidence we need.  We don't need to look for any immediate sign for conformation such as hot flashes, nor do we have to fall backwards as someone slams us in the forehead to know that we have received the Holy Spirit. We should not look for some feeling as proof that God has granted our prayer for this fresh filling of His Spirit.  Our faith must always rest in the sure Word of God, and never in a feeling, and this is because our feelings often change, but God's Word never does.

Another thing we should know is that our fleshly bodies are not Spirit-tight containers, so we need to be refilled daily!  We eat, drink, and sleep to recharge our fleshly bodies daily, and our spiritual bodies need recharging and refreshing as well.

This happens when we read God's Word, spend time in Prayer with Him, including our petition of Him to fill us up afresh.
Having the Holy Spirit and His power within us is absolutely necessary to be effective in our Christian walk.  Walking in the flesh is like walking across a vast desert with a limited amount of water; it will only take you so far, and then it's face down.   So if I were planning on going face down I would rather do it before God at the beginning of each day in prayer in preparation for the test that will inevitably come my way.

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you today to ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit and equip you to do all that He has planned.

STUDY QUESTION: Why should we ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit daily?  Why should we ask in faith?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Have you found yourself going "face down" during certain times of your Christian walk?

APPLICATION:  Don't get bummed during these times, get humble and simply turn to God and ask for His blessing of being filled with the Holy Spirit.  Ask Him daily to empower you to be filled so that you might be equipped for every task that comes your way.

Father, fill me today with Your Holy Spirit.  May it overflow in my life, and may others see and hear You in me and through my words as I speak to them.  May Your son be glorified, for I ask this in His precious name, amen...

Be Blessed,  Pastor Scott
