A Jar of Jelly Beans

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV)

There is one thing we all have in common whether we are Christians or not, and that is that we will all face many challenges throughout our lives. Some are minor day-to-day type, while some are more significant such as a loss of a loved one, either through death or simply an attack on a relationship. Some of the tougher ones may seem to take us to the brink of giving up. It is at these times that we might not want to hear someones rosy analogy or bright cheery answer of, Its all good bro, because in their life, it isnt; it hurts and it can be discouraging.

What we should know though, is that God has a plan throughout every aspect of these challenging times. We dont have to tell others who are going through times of distress, that we know what their going through, or that we understand what they feel like, we just need to be a friend and share that time with them and continue to give good counsel through Gods truth and love. You see, it is His Word that comforts and heals and directs all of us for every occasion in life. It is just our privilege to be the one used in sharing it.

As I look onto the passage of Scripture above, I realize that our physical body is continuing its journey of dieing, one day at a time. And although that in itself can be discouraging to many, I choose to focus on the rest of the Scripture, which tells me that my real person, my spirit, is being renewed at the same pace, day-by-day. I also have solace in knowing that all of these troubles both small and great are being used to bring about an eternal glory.
I think that this is the thing I choose to hang my hat on, in that eternity is forever, while temporary is just that, temporary. So why do we get do caught up on the temporary stuff? Why do we focus on what we do and dont have in the physical realm and allow that to dictate our attitudes and outlook?

Being a Christian and having an understanding what is waiting for us as well as what is available to us now (Eph. 1) because of our relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit should inspire us to be a very happy people. Instead, we often act like a kid with a jar of jellybeans that is almost empty, and therefore we are sad; forgetting the whole time that our father (God) owns the whole jelly bean factory and we are the joint heirs and co-owners.

I guess the only people who have a right to be downcast are the ones who dont know the Lord, or have declared that they dont want to have a relationship with Him. For them, I guess the jellybeans are the only thing to look forward to. Its sad to see, because these people have a veil covering their eyes and they cant see the truth because they dont have the Spirit of God to direct them.

This is where we need to pray for them folks; we need to encourage them by our actions, to be a witness of what Gods glory is doing in our lives.

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lords glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2Corinthians 3:16-18 (NIV)

Lets focus on eternal things and let our new paradigms reflect the joy of what God is doing in our lives, both in the good times and in the bad. Lets remember that God will use all of those tough experiences for His perfect plan and that we can be used even during these hardships. Our response to these situations may be the very thing those around us need to witness to show them just how real God is, and it may just lead them to a life of eternity with our Lord. As for me, that makes it all worth it.

STUDY QUESTION: Why shouldnt we loose heart during difficult times of testing and hardship?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you reflect Gods glory and remember that He is in control during your tough times?

APPLICATION: Lets make a pledge to slow down when things are going haywire in our lives. We cannot control others decisions, and actions, but we can control ours. So lets bring every thought captive to Christ-is it something that is going to bring my walk closer to the Lord? Is it going to be something that is going to bring this other persons walk closer?

Father, Thank You for renewing my spirit each and every day. Thanks for transforming me to be more like You. Help me to be the person I need to be during difficult times both in my life and the life of others. In Jesus precious name, amen&

    Be Blessed, Scott
