Be Still And Trust The Lord

Be still, and know that I am God;Psalms 46:10 (NKJV)

I don’t know about you, but being still isn’t always the easiest thing to do for me.   I find this especially true when I feel I am being personally attacked by something someone said.  It almost seems natural for me to attempt to defend myself, or even to counter attack when this happens, but we’re told not to do this.

Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rathergive place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”says the Lord. Rom. 12:19 (NKJV).

So what are we to do when someone verbally slanders us, or brings false accusation against us?  The truth is, we can all find ourselves having a hard time keeping from responding in kind, but this is what is best, as it simply takes the wood out of the fire (Prov. 26:20).  If someone comes up to you and asks if the accusation is true, simply respond by saying, “No.”

But let your “Yes’ be “Yes,’ and your “No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. Matt. 5:37 (NKJV)

I can recall many times where this wisdom would have served me well. Unfortunately I was more like Peter, meaning that my tongue was as sharp as his sword, I slashed away at many an ear with my improper words. And even though these temptations to respond may remain, I can honestly say I am better prepared now, because I understand the nature of the enemy and how spiritual warfare is waged (Eph. 6:10-18; 2Cor. 10:3-5).

So, how can we get rid of the anxiety welling up from within when we feel our character or integrity is being attacked, or when we are being persecuted for something we did not do?  We need to be still and wait upon the Lord, and trust that He will guide us.  He will defend us and exalt us when we are persecuted wrongfully, especially when it is because of our belief in Him.   Ultimately, Satan wants to break down our witness, and he will bring accusation against us falsely, hoping we retaliate in an unloving way.

I want encourage you today — Jesus has made it abundantly clear that if anyone is attacking one of His followers, they are actually attacking Him (Acts. 9:7).  God will defend us — we just need to have faith and be still and allow Him to defend us.  We can’t be like Peter jumping up and taking out our sword and lopping off people’s ears.  And we definitely need to hold our tongues. God is going to handle each situation carefully and perfectly, and in just the right time.

STUDY QUESTION: What does God ask of us in Psalm 46:10?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Are you willing to be still and let God defend you next time you are attacked?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Trust God in every situation, and know He will defend you and expose the truth as you seek the shelter of His protection.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, Thank You for teaching me Your Word and Your ways. I confess I have fallen in this area and have defended myself when others have attacked me.  I am choosing to place my trust in You today and ask for You to be my “soul” defender.  Help me to see Satan’s deceiving ways when I am being wrongly accused, and give me the peace I need to walk through these times.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
