A Gift From Heaven

John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.John 3:27 (NKJV)

So here’s the scene.  Some followers of John the Baptist confront him to ask him about Jesus.  They were concerned because all the people were coming to Jesus and being baptized, and they feared this would take the light off of John’s ministry. John looks at them and says, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven”(John 3:25-27).

John knew his job was to point people to Jesus and not to himself personally.  John didn’t aspire to be some great teacher or theologian, so instead of getting into a heated debate about theology or become hurt at someone else’s popularity, he simply chose to do what God asked of him — to testify about Jesus.   John had done his job well; there was fruit in people repenting and wanting to know and follow Christ.

What John said and did is still true today. God has chosen us to be used as vessels of honor.  We are the instruments now of our generation to spread the Gospel message of Jesus.  We can see the Apostle Paul speaking of this to the Corinthians.

For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us2Corinthians 4:5-7 (NKJV)

And we can see the fruit of Paul’s obedience all throughout the New Testament.  In Acts 26:19-20, we see him testifying that his actions were done in obedience to God and the heavenly visiongiven to him.  We can look unto John and Paul’s life as a witness to how we should share our testimony of Jesus Christ, and be obedient to the vision given to us by God.

We might not be called to go to Asia or Rome to testify about Jesus.  We might not be shipwrecked because of our faith in the Lord.  But we have all been given neighbors, co-workers and family we can be a light unto — both in deed and in word.  Being able to share Jesus with others is both a gift from Heaven and a commandment.

I want to encourage you today to ask God to rekindle the vision He has for you, your neighborhood, your marriage, and even your work environment.  Let God’s light and love be manifested in and through you today.  And when people see it and complement you, point them to Jesus.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 3:27 what is the source of our ministry, power, strength and the light shining from us?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you pointing others to Jesus by your actions and in your words?  Are you being obedient to the heavenly vision given to you by God?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord today and ask Him to give you a vision for every aspect of your life.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, Thank You for giving me a fresh vision for my life.  Thank You for allowing me to be a part of Your Ministry.  Help me today to see the opportunities placed before me.  Empower me to serve as Jesus did.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
