Available and Willing

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Phil. 2:3-4 (NKJV)

I’ve made a lot of trips to various hospitals throughout my years in ministry — trips to visit, to encourage, to pray, and even to console those who are in need. If there is one thing I’ve learned from all the visits it would be, “God heals.”  He heals physically, spiritually, and mentally. Regardless of how the healing comes, it is always God who does the healing, and many times He will use ordinary people as part of the healing process.

The truth is, every one of us, as followers of Jesus, can and should be used in ministry, and this is because we have all been called. All ministries can, and should be, an act of worship unto our Lord.  Having a servant’s heart is an attribute of the indwelling Holy Spirit of God. We can clearly see, Jesus did not come here to earth to be served, but to serve (Matt. 20:28).  And we are to be imitators of Jesus (Eph 5:1).

We are told in God’s Word, our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in us, and we are not our own. We have been bought at a price (Christ’s death); therefore we are to glorify God in our body and in our spirit (1 Cor. 6:19-20).  We are also told this is a reasonable request from God based on His mercy upon our lives as sinners.  We are not to be like those who are being transformed by this world - we are to be transformed like Christ (Rom. 12:1-2).

This leaves but one question for each of us who claim to be followers of Jesus.

Q: Am I willing to be used by God in serving others – Am I available?

We are blessed to be living in these last days — we are very close to seeing our Lord.  We are witnessing an ever-increasing instability in our nation, and it is affecting everyone at some level. We can be a part of the problem, or a part of the solution.  We can be used by Satan to pass around discouragement, or be used by God to pass around hope. We can sit by idly and do nothing, or be used by God in the lives of those in need. We simply need to be available and willing.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Philippians 2:3-4, what is our attitude to be and what should we be willing to do?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to let God to use you mightily?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Ask God to open your eyes to opportunities. Pray about this daily and make it a priority to be available and willing.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for opening my eyes with Your Word. Thank You for bringing me opportunities to invest into the lives of others. Help me to see these opportunities today, and give me the words and abilities to share and help those in need.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
