A Healthy Spirit

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 1 Tim. 4:8 (NKJV)

I don’t know about you, but I have found this to be true in my life; when I put on a few unwanted pounds, my inclination is to go ride my bike some crazy amount of miles, or head to the gym to lift some weights in an attempt to work off some extra calories. Now in sheer physics, this would seem to make sense, but I will usually find myself more hungry and eating more, because I am working harder to burn all those extra calories doing these hard workouts. I generally find I will just maintain my weight instead of losing it. 

Makes perfect sense when you think about it, as it works the same way in our cars when we pin the gas pedal to the floor, it consumes more fuel, and we have to refuel more often as a result. My friend Sean rightly once told me, “You can’t outwork a bad diet,” and I have found this to be true. If I am determined to transform my body by losing some weight, then I need to change my eating habits, and begin to make good choices with what I am putting into my body.  

When I think about this principle I think it applies to our spiritual lives as well as our physical bodies.  For example, our going to church three times a week, or reading our Bibles every day is great, but it isn’t going to have the desired effect we hoped for with regard to our transformation as Christian men and women, if we aren’t taking captive the bad thoughts we’re thinking upon within our mind, and cutting out all the improper activities we are choosing to participate in.  

This is in no way implying that we somehow work off any bad stuff that we may have done throughout our day, week, or life — Christ has already done everything that needs to be done to atone for our sin (Rom. 6:10).  But if we are going to be transformed spiritually, then we must actively make healthy choices that lead to change.

Physical exercise is good, and it will help us feel better and be healthier.  But disciplining our physical body isn’t nearly as important compared to how we discipline ourselves to live godly lives (1 Tim. 4:8).  I have found when my spirit is healthy; I am more apt to do what is right for my physical body as well (cf. Rom. 12:1; 1 Cor. 6:19-20). 

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today. 

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Timothy 4:8, what is the most profitable thing we can be doing?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you placing a greater emphasis on your physical life, rather than your spiritual?  Are you attempting to work off the bad stuff in your life, by trying to live a more spiritual life?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Allow God’s love and the blood of Jesus to truly cleanse you of any sin you have in your life.  You are free from death and the condemnation that comes from the enemy. Choose to walk in victory and eat healthy spiritually, and physically. 

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for Your amazing grace upon my life. Thank You for allowing Your Son Jesus to die for me, so I might be declared righteous by You.  Help me to remember that I don’t have to work off my sin like I would the extra pounds on my body.  Thank You for reminding me that there is not condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  Help me to live a spiritually healthier life.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
