Still In The Business of Miracles

Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Acts 6:7-8 (NKJV)

Throughout the pages of our Bibles we can see many recordings of the miraculous works of God. The fact that God has always been in the business of doing miracles makes perfect sense, since the very definition of the word, “Miracle” is an “Act of God.”  A miracle can be defined as something humanly impossible, but divinely simple.  Miracles have always testified of God’s divine nature, and they have always been used to draw mankind closer to Him, or to accomplish His perfect will for a certain situation, or a person’s life.

What I find to be most fascinating about God’s miracles is that He allows us to be a part of them.  A great example of this was when Joshua prayed for the sun to stand still as he battled against the five Kings of the Amorites, and we are told that it did not go down for almost an entire day (Joshua 10:12-13).  God had a plan for Joshua to fight these kings, and so He empowered him to do mighty feats and to request a miracle to be done. Joshua was obedient to God’s calling, and we can see that signs and wonders definitely followed him.

As amazing as this may seem, we need to realize that God has also commissioned us to go into battle, by preaching the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15).  Jesus spoke this to His disciples, and He clearly stated there would be wonders and signs (miracles) following those who believe, including casting out demons, speaking with new tongues, laying hands upon the sick, resulting in them recovering (Mark 16:17-18).

In the book of Acts we see Jesus’ promise come to fruition as Peter was faithful to the great commission of sharing the gospel, and the church grew that day from 120 to over 3000, and many signs and wonders were done through the apostles (Acts. 2:41-43).  And a few chapters later we are told Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people (Acts 6:8).  The apostle Paul spoke of the many signs and wonders that God had done through him as he preached unto the Gentiles (Romans 15:9), and he made sure that followers of Jesus understood these miracles were indeed a gift from God, as recorded in his letter to the church of Corinth (1 Corinthians 12:10).

Chances are, we will not keep the sun from setting today as a result of our prayer.  But if we ask God to equip us with a love for sharing the message of Jesus Christ, and for sharing our testimony of what He has done in our life, then we might just see the miracle of bringing the Son into their life for eternity. One thing is for sure, if we choose to be obedient to our Lord, then we should expect signs and wonders (miracles) to follow. God is still in the business of doing miracles every day.

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Acts 6:7-8, we are told that Stephen heard the word of God. What was the result of this?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to be obedient to Jesus’ calling upon your life to share what He has done for you upon the cross?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to let God do great things through YOU today.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, I thank You for Your miraculous transformation of my life.  I invite You to continue to transform me to be more like Jesus today. Help me to see opportunities to share Him with others.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

May the Lord bless your day abundantly, Scott
