Pay It Forward

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 (NKJV)

In 1916, Lily Hardy Hammond wrote, "You don't pay love back; you pay it forward." In essence, Jesus told His disciples to do the same thing, by telling them to love one another (John 13:34).  We see the Apostle John continuing to pay this lesson forward, as he encouraged other believers—he wrote, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7).

And we can see this same principle of paying it forward within the life of the apostle Paul. He learned selflessness through Jesus, and then made it his life goal to teach believers within the church to live in this same way. In his letter to the Philippian church he wrote, Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:4-5). And in his letter to the church of Corinth he clearly showed he had a heart to share what he learned from God, by telling them, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you…” (1 Cor. 11:23).

Since we can clearly see the concept of paying it forward is from our Lord, and written throughout the scriptures, it should motivate us to examine our own lives to see if we are actually paying forward what He has entrusted to us. Are we sharing the promises and truth contained within His word when others are struggling? Are we doing what’s best for others no matter what it costs us?  Are we distributing the resources He has so graciously given us into the lives of those who are in need?

God has given each of us so much, such as our abilities, talents, resources, and His word, just to mention a few.  And He will be faithful to give us opportunities to share these things with others.  We simply have to decide if we are willing to pay it forward?

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Luke 6:38, what can we learn about paying forward what we have been given?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to pay forward out of the abundance of blessings God has bestowed upon you?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to be distributors of what God has graciously given to you, rather than keeping it to yourself.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for the abundant blessings You have given to me. Help me to remember that each of these things has been given to me to use to bless others.  Help me to clearly see when I have the opportunities to pay it forward to others.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
