A New Beginning

Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV)

Well it's that time of year again, January 1st — a time to start a new year off.  For many people this day represents a new blank sheet of paper, a new canvas, and a new beginning.  Deep down inside I think every one of us likes having a chance to start over when we've not done something to the best of our ability.  And thankfully we don’t have to wait until January 1st to have a new start, because God’s mercies are new every day (Lam. 3:22-23).

I remember reading an article in a fitness magazine one time titled, Success Stories.  The story was about a lady who had lost 60 pounds, and had kept it off for more than 2 years. Years earlier she and her husband started a business together.  She had no time to workout and she ended up becoming stressed out. Stopping all the healthy practices that kept her in shape, she begin to eat fast food, and as a result, she ended up gaining a bunch of weight. This women's husband had a great metabolism, and even though he ate the same junk food, he didn't gain the weight.  He began to criticize her and their marriage suffered, eventually ending in divorce.

I started to think about how the enemy uses this tactic in every one of our lives in various areas.  We can become so busy—consumed with other things—and we begin to neglect taking in the nutrients from the solid food of our Bibles. We stop spending time with God and with other believers.  Soon we can find ourselves spiritually unfit and out of shape.  As a result, our marriage, business, and virtually every aspect of our life will suffer. It’s time for a new beginning.

The story of this lady continued with her taking out an old exercise video and she began to start to workout. At first it was hard, she had lost the ability to do what she used to do, but she continued to do as much as she could and each day she would add a little more. Within a month, she lost 8 pounds.  She then started to eat differently — she thought about what her body needed, and added good food.  Soon, she lost an additional 27 pounds. She was now ready to get back into the gym, and she added a stringent routine, enabling her to lose an additional 30 pounds. She stated, "I didn't get mad, I got fit."

I don't think of this as a success story for the most part.  After all, the enemy destroyed the marriage of these two people.  Even so, we can learn much from her story, and we can glean good, healthy principles for making a change in our spiritual condition.  Thankfully, God has a workout plan and a remedy, and it comes with a guarantee.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.

STUDY QUESTION: What guarantee has God given us in His Word according to Joshua 1:8?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you meditating on God's Word day and night? Are you abiding in what He has asked of you in His Word?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:  Seek the Lord today in everything you do. His mercies are new and He is waiting to do a mighty work in your life. He will make your way prosperous and you will have good success if you do.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for Your mercies. Thank You that I can start over today, and every day. Thank You for helping me to do the things that I am incapable of doing on my own. I need You today so I can be the person You have called me to be. In Jesus’ precious name, amen...
