A Proper Knowledge And Heart

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him… Colossians 1:9-10 (NKJV)

If there were one thing to be said about the Apostle Paul it would have to be his faithfulness.  Paul was faithful to his calling as a follower of Jesus Christ — even to the point of dying for Him. One of Paul’s greatest attributes was his faithfulness in praying for other believers. In virtually every letter he wrote to each church he would encourage them to pray for each other, and then he would share how he was praying for them.

In his letter to the church of Colossi Paul he prayed the people of the church would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, and that they may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him being fruitful in every good work (Col. 1:9-10).

I believe Paul’s prayer gives us great insight to specific areas we should be continually focusing on in our Christian walk.  And the easiest way see if we are being faithful in these areas is to ask ourselves honest questions utilizing Paul’s prayer.

· Am I being filled with the knowledge of God’s will for how I am to live my life? (Rom. 12:1-2)

· Am I asking God for His wisdom and spiritual understanding as I am reading His Word? (James. 1:5)

· Am I walking worthy of the Lord, meaning, is my conduct godly and am I doing things in an effort to fully please God? (Eph. 4:1; Col. 1:10; 1 Thess 2:12)

· Am I being fruitful in every good work?

Paul knew every Christian believer would struggle in certain areas of their flesh, so he outlined basic biblical principles within his prayer to guide them into continuing to seek the Lord for His will, power, and for His guidance in their lives.  Paul knew if they had biblical knowledge, if they understood God’s will, and if they had the wisdom to apply what they knew, then they would definitely be able to walk in a way worthy of the Lord.

And for this reason, we too must seek to know God’s will for our lives. We must seek a greater understanding of His Word — not simply to acquire knowledge, but to be equipped to live righteously, and to help others in their walk. And, it should be our heart's desire to live in a way that pleases our Lord, as we reflect His love, mercy, grace, and glory.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 1:9, what should we be seeking, and how should we be living?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to seek the Lord’s will for your life through His Word (Rom. 12:1-2), and then obey what you know to be right?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to walk worthy of the Lord, and be faithful to pray for your Christian brothers and sisters.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for showing me what I should be seeking, and how I should be praying for other believers.  Help me to know Your will as I read Your Word, and empower me to walk in a way worthy of You. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Blessings upon your day, Scott
