The Perfect Note

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NKJV)

I’ve grown up with music my whole life. I love music — all sorts of music. The diversity of different types of music can really set the mood for just about any occasion.  Such is the case for worship music on a Sunday morning church service.  Each instrument and voice add something to the total experience, and when they blend together in a proper way it is sheer harmony.  If one attempts to shine brighter than the others in the group it will show, and it will take away from the effectiveness and quality of the whole group. For example, a drummer can be beating the drums into submission — overpowering the vocals and other instruments, instead of coming alongside and complementing everyone else.

This sweet blending of musicians and instruments is a perfect picture of how we should be working together within the body of Christ.  Each of us has been given certain gifts, and we should place our focus on coming alongside others — complementing and enhancing their gifts, rather than attempting to draw attention to the gifts we have been given ourselves.  I believe when we do this we are actually walking in humility rather than pride.

…Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. 1 Peter 5:5-6 (NKJV)

The way I see it; God has a perfect plan for how we are to be used to complement others, and He desires to lead us like a conductor in a symphony.  If we allow Him to lead us, we can be sure every action we do will be in grace, humility, and love, and it will be the sound of our Lord striking the perfect note — a note sweetly received unto others — one drawing attention to God alone.

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today. Choose to allow God to lead you today in all you do.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn with respect to our gifting and abilities and how they should be used?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you the type of musician who beats the drums to draw attention to yourself, or do you humbly complement and enhance the gifting of others?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord to lead you in how you use your gifting today to be a part of His team.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for the gifting You have given to me.  Show me how I can use these gifts to be a blessing to all.  Lead me this day in all I do.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
