His Wisdom And Understanding

Get wisdom! Get understanding!  Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom.  And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:5-7 (NKJV)

Have you ever attempted to find a solution to a problem or a project you were working on, but you just couldn’t quite make a decision as to what you should do?  Most of us can relate to this, and most of us will probably find ourselves doing some more research, or just go to a good reliable source for some insight and direction.  This is a principle I call, “Not leaning upon our own understanding,” and it is a biblical principle as well.

King Solomon, the wisest man to ever have lived, said, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Prov. 3:5-6 NKJV).

We tend to lean upon our own understanding because it is made up of those things we have learned.  We tend to have difficulty trusting anyone but ourselves when making certain decisions, and unfortunately this can include God. But we would be wise to remember that God knows exactly what we need at all times, and He alone has our best interests in mind.

Q: So how can we receive God’s wisdom and guidance for making our choices?

Solomon gave us the answer when he said to acknowledge God in “all” our ways (Prov. 3:6).  This means, we need to be reading His Word so we can learn His wisdom and His will for our lives.  This also means, we must turn “every” area of our lives over to Him. Truth be told, we should be trusting in His guidance in EVERY choice we make.  This is not to say we should stop using our God-given ability to reason, but that we shouldn’t be trusting in our own ideas to the exclusion of all others.

Do not be wise in your own eyes…Proverbs 3:7 (NKJV)

As Christian men and women, we will continue to be transformed throughout our lives into the image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. But in every area where we refuse to acknowledge Him, or submit to His written word, we will find grief, and we will impede the transformation process.

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained in this devotional, what can we learn about seeking God’s wisdom, and not relying on our own?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: In what areas of your life are you not acknowledging God?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to acknowledge God’s will for every area of your life, and be willing to surrender your will and submit to His.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for Your wisdom to direct and guide my decision making process.  Help me to know Your will as I read Your Word, and help me to remember what I have read, and to find proper comprehension and application.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
