How We Should Treat Others
6/20/2018

And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewiseLuke 6:31 (NKJV)

I recall attending a Market Place Ministries Luncheon a couple of years ago, where many business owners and workers were in attendance.  Dr. Steven Miller was the guest speaker, and we were blessed as he gave his testimony of how God has impacted the way he does business. As he shared some experiences and wisdom, one phrase seemed to catch my ear — probably because it was so simple, but profound. He said, “I try to treat my customers very special and make them feel like family.”

As I thought about this statement I immediately thought about how every one of us likes to be treated special, and I have to admit that it is a pretty cool feeling when you go into a business and they treat you like family.  The principle isn’t a new one — in fact Jesus has given us the basis for how we are to treat others—He said, just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” (Luke 6:31).

Think about how different this world would be if everyone simply obeyed this commandment. The fact of the matter is, even Christians can find themselves not following this rule, and this is because it is much easier to treat others in the same manner we are being treated, especially when we are being treated unfairly, or unlovingly. God understands we will encounter unruly, angry, rude, and even mean people throughout our life, but it doesn’t change the way He wants us to act towards them.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. Romans 12:14, 17 (NKJV)

The truth is we will all struggle at times in being genuinely nice towards those who are anything but nice to us, but we can find ourselves being very successful when we conduct our acts of kindness and love as unto the Lord (Col. 3:17, 23; 1 Cor. 10:31).  Think about it, how will anyone ever see the love of Jesus if we don’t allow Jesus to love others through us?

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Choose to live for God in everything you do.  Choose to make those around you feel special by the way you treat and speak to them.  Who knows, maybe they’ll want to know why you are the way you are, and then you can share Jesus with them, and give the glory to God.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what could we learn with respect to how God wants us to treat others?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: How do you like to be treated by others? Are you willing to treat them in the way God wants?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to treat others with courtesy and respect, regardless of how they may treat you.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for teaching me how I should treat others. Help me to be Christ-like when I encounter those who are mean and rude.  Remind me of Your Word, and change my heart to be more like Jesus. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
