Walking In Faith

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

There is a story in 2 Kings 6 where we see the prophet Elisha working with some men to build a structure.  As they were clearing trees for lumber, one of the ax head falls off of a young man’s handle and it sinks into the Jordan River.  Immediately the man begins to freak out, because the ax he was using was borrowed and not his.  Immediately Elisha comes to him and asks him, “Where did it fall?”

The man tells him and Elisha then proceeds to throw a stick into the river where it sank, and immediately the ax head begins to float upon the water.  Elisha then tells the young man, “Pick it up for yourself,” so the man reached out his hand and took it.

As I read this story it encourages me to know how God is working in every detail of our life, and there is nothing He cannot do to help us in our time of need.  I can also see how God wanted this young man to experience this blessing and to encourage him in his walk, as God prompted Elisha to have the young man reach out and pick up the ax head so he would personally participate in this miracle.

God could have kept the ax head from falling off, or He could have kept it from coming loose in the first place. God was working in the life of this young man and this was the way He chose to do it.  He allowed the man to come to the end of his own abilities and resources before showing him He was completely in control, but He would still require the young man to reach out in faith and pick it up.

I believe God — in His sovereignty — allows us to come to the end of ourselves at some point in our resources or abilities.  In the midst of these tests we will face the temptation to be anxious or even fearful.  We must understand and remember God is always in control and is able to provide both protection and provision in remarkable ways.  Our part is to continue to trust and believe — this will entail our walking in faith.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Always remember, God is in control, and He has a perfect plan for whatever you may face.  Be willing to do your part even if it means reaching out in faith and picking up a floating ax head.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Hebrews 11:6 what can we learn about the importance of having faith?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to walk in faith and to be obedient in doing what you know to be right even in those times where you may lack hope in your situation?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Commit yourself to doing what is right by God and allow Him to work out all the details.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for showing me in this story how You are working everything together for my good.  Lord I do love You and I trust You for every aspect of my life.  Guide me today in knowing Your will for how to live for You.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
