I Am Thankful

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!  For His mercy endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34 (NKJV)

I heard a tale years ago — one to illustrate thankfulness. It goes like this — there was a lady who had lost her son in the waves of the ocean and so she had cried out to the Lord, “Oh Lord, please save my son!”  As she sat there worrying about her son she continued to pray, and sure enough the next wave spit him out totally safe upon the shore.  She looked at him and quickly said to the Lord, “He was wearing a hat when he was sucked out to sea Lord.”

As I thought about this, I couldn’t help but think of how we can sometimes take the things the Lord is doing and providing for us for granted —those everyday blessings including our health, shelter, provisions, friends, family, and even our answered prayers. Unfortunately, there can be times where we ask God for something and our prayers are answered and we don’t acknowledge His blessings, but we are quick to continue to focus on what we don’t have at that particular moment.

So the question is this — How can we better identify and acknowledge our Lord’s blessings upon our life?

I think one of the best ways to identify the Lord’s blessings within our lives is by simply stopping and spending time with Him in prayer.  We should regularly take an inventory list of the things we have been blessed with and thank God on a daily basis. Think about it, what if we knew tomorrow we would only have those things we earnestly thanked God for today? How differently would we praise God if we thought there was a chance we would lose everything we took for granted or failed to give thanks for?  Would we praise Him with a heart of sincere thankfulness?

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Choose to look at the many things you have been blessed with in your life today.  Even when things are bad, there are many blessings to be thankful for.

in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what could we learn about our being thankful?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you spend time with God each day, praising Him and thanking Him for His many blessings?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to take some time each day with the Lord and thank Him for what you have been given and blessed with.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your many blessings upon my life.  Thank You for the very air I breathe, and for my health. Thank You for my family, friends, and every good provision You have provided.  Help me to be mindful of these things each day, as I am tempted to look and long for more. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
