Proclaiming The Truth In Love

Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.” 1 Samuel 12:24-25 (NKJV)

Have you ever found yourself in a position to speak truth into the life of a Christian brother or sister, but you opted to not say anything for fear of them rebuking you, or simply not liking you?  Each of us have probably found ourselves in this position, and we have probably chosen not to say anything at times when we knew we should have spoken up.

As I read throughout the Old Testament I am reminded of the faithfulness of God’s true Prophets — those who were chosen to convey messages from God to His people.  Most of the time the messages were tough ones to give, as they often included a call to repent, the judgment of God, or even the message of impending judgment (Ex. Jonah 3:4).

Needless to say, these prophets were not very popular amongst God’s people, unless of course they were false prophets who chose to speak only pleasing things.  Being a prophet of God was not about popularity though, it was about being obedient to what God had called them to do, which meant proclaiming His word in truth.  Prophecy is often thought of in the sense of the foretelling (prediction) of future events, but it is also the “forth” telling, which is sharing the heart and mind of God by sharing His Word.

As Christian men and women, we have been called to proclaim the truth of God’s Word as well.  And just as it was unpopular with the Prophets of God in the Old Testament writings, it may very well be unpopular for us as well. There will be times where we will be able to encourage others with the scriptures, but there will also be times when we will have to admonish others in love.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Choose to be accountable to others and care enough to share God’s word in truth and love.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 3:16 what are we told to do as Christian men and women?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to share the truth with others in a loving way, even if it makes you unpopular?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Decide to become a mouthpiece for God and make a decision to allow Him to lead you to speak into the lives of others.

PRAYER: Father, I thank You for the many examples You have given me of the faithful men who have proclaimed Your Word.  Help me to be faithful to do the same with those in my life.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
