“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD.  “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV)

In Mark, Chapter Seven there is a story of Jesus healing a man who was deaf and had an impediment of speech.  The crowds had begged Jesus to put His hand upon the man and to heal him.  Jesus took the man aside from all the people and then He placed His fingers into the man’s ears and He took His own saliva and touched the man’s tongue.  With this Jesus spoke the words, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened.”  We can see the result of Jesus’ actions in Mark 7:35.

Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. Mark 7:35 (NKJV)

We can see times where Jesus healed many because of their faith in Him, and He even healed some based upon the faith of another person, as in the case of the Roman Centurion’s servant (Matt. 8:5-13). There were some people that Jesus healed by going to them personally and touching them, while others He would simply speak healing upon their lives.

Q: Why would Jesus use different techniques in the healing of people?

I personally believe He chose different methods for a couple of reasons.  First, I believe He used the best method for each person depending on his or her personal needs and in accordance with God’s perfect will. Perhaps personal contact was needed so the person being healed would see and experience the Lord’s compassion and love, or be strengthened in their personal faith.  For some it may have been more about the person making the request rather than the one actually being healed.

Additionally, I believe Jesus was showing us His healings can never be attached to some sort of methodology — each healing was/is uniquely different and was/is done in God’s power and sovereignty.  God knows we have a propensity to try to turn everything into a refined system or program — attempting to duplicate by our own resources and abilities.  Jesus might have used different techniques, but the source of the healings was always the same — It was from God.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Isaiah 55:8-9 what can we learn about God’s ways and thoughts compared to our way of thinking and acting?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to accept God’s perfect and unique plan for transforming you to be like Jesus?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to allow God to work in His perfect and unique ways within your life.  His ways are better.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and love for each of us. Thank You for meeting me where I am at and being sensitive to what I truly need.  Help me to see those areas where I need healing in my Christian walk, and give me the strength to submit to Your plan for these areas.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
