One Stone at a Time
2/12/2018

Then I said to them, “You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.” Nehemiah 2:17 (NKJV)

There have been times in my life where what I am facing seems far too big for me to achieve success on my own. The sheer magnitude of a project can seem both daunting and deterring, and I might not see how I can possibly make a significant difference.  I think we can all relate to these times, whether it is a large-scale project, an emotional crisis, or a financial challenge.  And yet, we should never lose hope in the fact that God has a perfect plan for us, and He will gladly guide us through every valley and challenge we face.

The prophet Nehemiah was led to return to Jerusalem, and to lead his people in rebuilding the wall around the city. It lay in ruins from the Babylonian army from their siege years earlier, but it was now time to rebuild it.  The first thing he did was to size up the task and make an estimate of what needed to be done. He would look right into the damage and make a plan to repair each broken section one stone at a time.

Nehemiah would seek the Lord’s will for this project and he would then communicate what the Lord had laid upon his heart with those who would be needed to complete the task.  I would have to imagine there were many people in the city who may have initially doubted their own ability to affect any real change by their own efforts, and they would have been right.  God had a plan to do something spectacular but it would require them to be faithful in working together.

This holds true for us today as well — we may be facing something overwhelming or maybe we just don’t see how we can make any real difference, but we can if we are faithful in doing our part. Our faith is never to be centered on our own abilities, but on the One who can do “all things.”  We are simply the conduits of His great works.

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Never allow the enemy to overwhelm you with the task.  Choose to place your faith in the Lord helping you just as He did Nehemiah and the Israelites — one stone at a time.  Before you know it, as you are faithful to do your part you will one day look back and see what the Lord has done.

The LORD has done great things for us, And we are glad. Psalms 126:3 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: According to Galatians 6:9 why should we never lose heart in doing good?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to be faithful in doing what needs to be done and to trust the Lord in every aspect of your life?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to do what you know to be right and not be discouraged at the size of the endeavor.  Allow God to do something spectacular through you.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for sharing the story of Nehemiah with us. Thank You for showing me how I need to be faithful to do my part. Help me to do what needs to be done in my life today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
