Finding God
1/30/2018

“…Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” John 4:20 (NKJV)

Have you ever spoke to someone about God only to see them shut the subject down, or begin to get agitated and respond negatively? I know I have, and often times it is because they are simply confused; having heard many variations of manmade religious beliefs, they have seemingly given up on trying to understand or find out about God.

In the Book of John we see Jesus speaking to a woman.  Through the conversation He reveals His knowledge of her sinful life and she initially responds by saying, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet” (John 4:19).  She then immediately began to share how she has heard conflicting stories as to where God was to be worshipped.

I believe she is simply asking Jesus—“Where do I find God?  Is He on Mount Gerizim where my fathers say He is, or is He in the Temple in Jerusalem as You Jews say He is?”  We can see Jesus’ response to her question in John 4:21.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father." John 4:21 (NKJV)

What was Jesus saying to her, and how does this affect our lives?  He was basically saying, “Worship is no longer going to be restricted to a certain temple, or specific place.”  Worship of God can be done anywhere because God can be found everywhere we are.  He is here with us as we study His Word, and He is with us when we are watching our televisions and working on our computers as well.  God is with us when we are happily driving our cars into the church parking lot, and He is with us when we are getting frustrated with someone in the car next to us out on the freeway driving to work.

The fact is, God is spirit and He surrounds us; He is omnipresent, which means He is everywhere. If we are looking for God we can find Him right where we are. All we have to do is be diligent to seek Him.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

God rewards those who diligently seek Him for forgiveness, and who place their trust in Him for salvation. He will reward us when we seek His will for our lives, as we are faithful to read His Word.

The question then becomes, “Are we diligently seeking God for every aspect of our lives?”

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Let’s be diligent to seek God for everything we do.  Let’s seek His will for every decision we make.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Hebrews 11:6 what can we learn about God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to diligently seek God today for the choices you will be making?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make it a priority to take time each day to stop and prayerfully read God’s Word.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for allowing me to find You no matter where I am. Thank You for showing me Your will as I read Your Word.  Guide me with Your wisdom in all I do today Lord.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
