Choosing To Be An Instrument of Righteousness

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Romans 6:12-13 (NKJV)

One of our Constitutional rights is the right to keep and bear arms.  This second amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America gives us the right to have weapons to defend ourselves.  It gives us the right as an individual to protect ourselves against those who would have a mind to attack or harm us.

Unfortunately, we have had this very right attacked over and over again, as opponents of it continue to make the assertion of guns killing people.  But the fact is, whether you are a gun supporter or not, guns are not responsible for killing people - people are; the weapon is just a means of the undertaking.  If we didn’t have guns, then mankind would resort to using rocks or whatever weapon we could fashion to do the job. Guns can either be used to protect people or they can be used to harm people.  Guns can be weapons of unrighteousness, or weapons of righteousness; it depends on what they are being used for.

This same choice applies to how we will use our physical bodies; they can be used as instruments of unrighteousness, or as instruments of righteousness.  Again, the choice is ours to freely make. Our feet can be used to walk us into trouble, or they can be used to run from it. We can use our mouths to bless and encourage others, or we can use them to gossip and slander.  Our tongues can be used to speak a blessing upon another, or they can be used to cut them down carelessly.

Here is the point; we will get to make the decision each and every time whether we will be an instrument of righteousness in the hands of God, or an instrument of unrighteousness in hands of the enemy.  The decision will always begin in our mind, so it is important to take every thought captive and to get rid of anything coming against God's Word (2 Cor. 10:3-5).

And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Choose to be a person who seeks to allow God to use them for His work.  Choose to use your body as an instrument of righteousness for His glory.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Romans 6:12-13, how can we be an instrument of righteousness?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is it your heart's desire today to be used as an instrument of righteousness?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Start each day in prayer, asking the Lord to strengthen and guide you with His Wisdom so you may be an instrument of righteousness in His hands.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for the power of Your Holy Spirit dwelling in us as Your children. Thank You for allowing me to call upon this power and for giving me the strength not to sin today.  Help me to remember this gift when I am confronted with the temptation to sin.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
