A Living Sacrifice
12/20/2017

I will freely sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name, O LORD, for it is good. Psalms 54:6 (NKJV)

Have you ever worked really hard for something you wanted?  You may have sacrificed many smaller things to obtain something greater.  I remember as a child working by pulling weeds so I could earn some money to buy a bicycle.  I sacrificed my free time of playing with the neighborhood kids, but this only made my purchase of the bike that much sweeter.

I have to think this is the way King David felt as he prepared to bring sacrifices to God.  David had asked a man by the name of Ornan to sell him his land so he could build an altar to the Lord.  Ornan offered to freely give David his land, his oxen, the wood to burn the ox as an offering, and even the wheat for the grain offering, but David would have nothing to do with taking these things for free.  We can see his answer in the following verse (1 Chron. 21:24).

Then King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.” 1 Chronicles 21:24 (NKJV)

David’s answer not only showed integrity, but it showed his understanding of true sacrifice.  He knew he wanted to make his offer of sacrifice to God, and he knew it must cost him.  It is the same for you and I. If we are to truly give sacrificially it will cost us more than some token gift or effort. True sacrifice will cost each of us — it may be our time and money, or it may be any number of resources and abilities we possess.  Henceforth, as Christians we are called to live a life of sacrifice unto the Lord, as our life is no longer our own (1 Cor. 6:19-20).  When Christ calls us, He calls us to die to ourselves so we may live. It is a great sacrifice, but one worthy to make for sure.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1 (NKJV)

Q: How can we be effective in becoming a living sacrifice unto the Lord?

We will find success as we make it our heart's desire each morning to seek the Lord. King David knew this as well, so he instructed his leaders to do the same.

Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God... 1 Chronicles 21:19

I want to encourage you to think upon these things today.  Consider what it means to live your life as a living sacrifice unto the Lord.  Make the decision to be willing to give up whatever is needed — those things given to you by God.  Yes, it will cost you your life to live for the Lord, but the rewards are immeasurable.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained in this devotional what can we learn about our sacrificing to the Lord?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you set your heart and soul to seek the Lord?  Are you freely sacrificing the best of what you have to the Lord?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make it your heart's desire to be a living sacrifice, willing to use all you have for God.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your love for me.  Thank You for allowing Your Son to sacrifice His life for me.  I choose to become a living sacrifice unto You Lord.  Help me to see the opportunities today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
