Making New Memories
11/13/2017

But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 1 Thessalonians 4:9 (NKJV)

Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away and my wife and I are really looking forward to time spent with our children and grandchildren. I’m sure the sound of our grandchildren laughing and playing will bring back many memories we shared with our children.

When I think back on my early years in childhood, I can remember a few good memories with my family before my parents divorced. I was five when this happened and it would impact my life in many ways. Still, I have some of the fond memories of our family getting together on a weekend and spending time in the pool and barbequing food. I also remember when we went on a family vacation to Yosemite once—good times for sure.

All this to say it is so important to build great memories with our family and loved ones.  Life is an amazing gift and taking the time to appreciate those who share it with us is one of its amazing blessings.  As a parent we have been given a blessing and a responsibility to build into our children’s lives.

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)

As a spouse we have been given the same blessing and responsibility.  Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church, and wives are to submit and respect their husband (Eph. 5:25-33). And as a body of believers we again share the blessing and responsibility to invest into others as we are told to encourage, pray for, sharpen and love one another.

When we think about it, every act we do in love is building a memory in someone’s life, and God will use these very memories to remind them of how much they were loved.

Q: How are we to love others in the way God would want us to?

We are told in 1 Thess. 4:9 God will teach us how to love them.  We can know we are doing it properly when we are doing it genuinely and are willing to do whatever is best for the one being loved, regardless of what it costs us.

I want to encourage you today to think about building memories with those God has put in your life.  Be willing to take time to invest into others and to be what God has called you to be.  Seek the Lord to guide and lead you as you do this, and learn to enjoy each moment for what it offers.  As you look back you will be able to see how much you have been blessed by investing into others.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Thessalonians 4:9 how are we to learn to love others?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to build the kind of memories God wants for you?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Take time to invest into the people in your life.  Ask God to show you how to love them in an agape way—willing to do whatever is best for them, regardless of what it costs you.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your love in my life.  Thank You for showing me how to love others Lord.  Show me how to be what You have called me to be to those You bring into my life. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
