My Spiritual ID

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26 (NKJV)

A few years back I came home one day to find a package on my front porch.  It was a new selection of colored wristbands for the Road ID I use when I ride my bicycles.  The Road ID concept is simple, there is a little metal plate you can wear on a wristband, so that if you were to be involved in an accident and rendered unconscious, then the responding medical staff could determine valuable information about you, such as your identification, blood type, allergies, emergency contact, and much more. My wife and I feel a whole lot more comfortable knowing I have this wristband to identify me, and to help others to protect me.

As I thought about it I couldn’t help to think about how God had come up with the original Road ID thousands of years ago.  He sent the Holy Spirit into the world as a helper and a witness to those who are His children.  In much the same way that my Road ID identifies who I am physically, the Holy Spirit gives testimony to who I am in Christ Jesus.  If the enemy were ever to bring any accusation of my past sins before the Lord, I can be assured the Holy Spirit would bring His testimony about my identification by saying, “This one belongs to Me – He is God’s child and innocent” (cf, Rom. 8:16).

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Romans 8:16 (NKJV)

How should knowing the truth of our identity affect us as Christian men and women?  I believe it should give us great confidence and help us to understand why we are being bombarded with lies (Eph. 6:16).  It should help us to dispel these lies, and to strengthen our resolve to spend time in the God’s word, so we can continue being transformed, and to know the perfect will of God for our lives (Rom. 12:1-2).

If Satan can get us to believe his lies about our identity, self-worth, our abilities, and even our salvation, he will be successful in changing the way we live for God. When this happens we can suffer from an identity crisis and a type of spiritual dementia — getting all turned around between God’s truth and Satan’s lies. Our eyes will now be off of Jesus and back on the very things causing us to be distracted.

I want to encourage you today to ask yourself, “Who am I?” If you come up with any other description before being a child of God, then please know that your true identity is being diminished or shifted out of its proper place.  There is nothing greater than our identity in Christ — no job, no ability, nor any title should ever gain greater honor or glory.  You are a child of God; this is your ultimate Road ID.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the scriptures contained within this devotional, what could we learn with respect to our identity in Christ?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What are you most identified with?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Continue to focus on God’s truth contained within His Word.  Never be swayed or attempt to be identified with any other occupation or Title above being God’s child.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for allowing me to be Your child, and to have a relationship with You.  Father, help me to remember my primary identity every day, so I can walk in this truth. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
