Its Free For All
8/3/2017

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)

Have you ever heard the expression, free-for-all?  According to Merriam-Webster it was first used in 1881. The term “free-for-all” is most synonymous with fighting.  In fact the definition actually states it is a term referring to competition, dispute, or a fight open to all comers and it usually has no rules—it’s a brawl.  It is also defined as “A chaotic situation.”

Well long before Merriam-Webster defined this phrase for this type of hostile activity, God was using it for a peaceful one.  He used it to clarify how His amazing grace was free for all who would repent of their sinful lifestyle, believe in His Son, and receive His forgiveness.  It was through the blood of Jesus that we were made free from the bondage of sin.

But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.  And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. Romans 6:17-18 (NKJV)

Even though God’s free gift of salvation led to our being free from the bondage of the very sin once enslaving us; we should never use this liberty as a cloak for vice (1 Pet. 2:16).  We are told to stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and we are not to be entangled again with the yoke of bondage.  This simply means, we have been freed, so why go back to doing those things once responsible for our enslavement.

It is important to remember our freedom came at a great price—a price too high to truly count the cost.  As a result, our being free should be a great witness to those who are still in bondage to a life of sin.  Our walking in righteousness is what quiets the critics of Christ, as they now have nothing to refute our claim to have been transformed by Him.

For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men 1 Peter 2:15 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to share God’s love with others today.  Let’s let them know His grace is free-for-all.  Live in such a way as to put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Ephesians 2:8-9 how have we been saved and how much did it cost us?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to do good today so you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Take every thought captive and act on the ones you know to be right and just.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for freely loving me, and for freely giving me the gift of eternal life through Christ Jesus.  Help me to share this amazing gift freely with others today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
