Jesus — The Great I AM
8/2/2017

The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.” John 10:33 (NKJV)

When Moses was summoned to lead the Israelites out of the land of Egypt, he asked God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’ ” (Ex. 3:13-14).

And so we see God saying, “I AM” is the One who has come to free you from your bondage to slavery.  God was faithful to send help and to provide a way of escape to these Old Testament people.  God is equally faithful to send us One to lead us from the bondage and slavery to sin, and it is through Jesus Christ.

Jesus came so we might know the truth, because the truth would surely set us free if we will simply receive it.  Jesus came to provide a light so we might see clearly and no longer stumble in the darkness of sin.  Jesus came so we might be able to abide in Him—that we might be sustained and provide fruit, as all healthy branches that are attached to the vine will do.  Jesus came that we might be resurrected from the dead, and be born again spiritually—that we might have life, and life more abundantly.  Jesus said—

·  “I am the bread of life” John 6:35, 48

·  “I am the light of the world” John 8: 12, 9:5

·  “Before Abraham was, I am” John 8:58

·  “I am the door” John 10:9

·  “I am the good shepherd” John 10:11

·  I am the resurrection and the life” John 11:25

·  “I am the way, the truth, and the life” John 14:6

·  “I am the true vine” John 15:1

Jesus came to this earth—who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men (Phil. 2:6-7).  Jesus being fully God and fully man did what only God could do, as He forgave sins (Matt. 9:2-7, and allowed others to acknowledge Him as God (John 20:28).  The Jewish Pharisees and Sadducees saw this and they plotted to kill him for this very thing, which would have been truly blasphemous if it were not true—but it was, and Jesus—like His Father—is the great I Am.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Rev. 1:8 (NKJV)

Q: So how important is Jesus to our faith?

So important is Jesus, that without Him, we would not even exist, as He created everything including us (John 1:3).  Without Jesus we are dead in our trespasses, as He is the only way to Heaven (John 14:6; Rom. 10:9-10), and His name is the only name by which man must be saved (Acts. 4:12).  Simply put—Jesus is God! (John 1:1, 14; 10:30; 14:9).

Let’s be committed to defending the true identity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Let’s never allow anyone to diminish who our Bibles teach Him to be.  And let’s guard ourselves against any religion that would otherwise diminish His deity, because when they do this, they come against God’s truth and they worship a different Jesus.

STUDY QUESTION: In Isaiah 44:6 we read, “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.”  In Revelation 1:8 we see Jesus saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”  So do we have two firsts, and two lasts, or are Jesus and God actually one— one God, distinctly different, as the Bible clearly teaches (John 10:30)?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you believe that Jesus is God?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Rightly divide the word of God so you can defend the truth contained in it (2 Tim. 2:15).

PRAYER: Father, thank You for giving me Your word of absolute truth to lead me in all understanding.  Open my eyes to the lies of the evil one (John 8:44), so I may see his lies clearly, and be prepared to show others where they can get Your truth.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
