Confidence In The Face of Big Waves

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NKJV)

As a child I grew up down at the beaches of Southern California. It was there in the waves of Huntington Beach where I fell in love with the ocean. It was there I remember learning to ride the waves — it was the best. It was new, exciting, and sometimes dangerous. At first I would ride the waves close to the shoreline, as I felt safe there.

Soon, I was moving further out, but I found this to be the toughest part, as I was in no man's land — too far from the safety of the shore, yet still too far from the impending crash of the larger waves. If I tried to escape them by swimming back to shore, the current would suck me back out towards the incoming wave right about the time it would be crashing down. Now, if you’ve ever been pounded and pinned down under a wave, then you know why this is a bad place to hang out.

I realized I needed to make a decision — either swim back to shore, or in faith, make the commitment to move forward to deeper waters. I finally opted for the deeper waters where I could receive the rewards of catching the bigger waves as they were just forming. The more time I spent in the water, the more comfortable I began to feel, and my faith to encounter big waves began to grow.

As I look back at this experience I can see a parallel to my walk with God. For example, before I became a Christian I would find my confidence and assurance in my abilities, my resources, my intellect, etc.—this made up the solid ground of my life. But when I was introduced to having a relationship with Jesus, I found myself making Him my rock and my foundation (1 Cor. 3:11). Immediately, Jesus drew me to the water—to the water of baptism, as I publically proclaimed my belief and desire to follow Him, and to the water of His Word (cf. Eph. 5:26), so I could know His will and be transformed by the renewing of my mind.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

As I started to venture out a little further in my Christian faith it was much like when I was making my way from the smaller safer waves out to the deeper water and the challenging bigger waves. There were times when I began to lose faith, as I found myself in a spiritual no man's land at times — failing to commit to going forward in faith, I found myself looking back to where I once found my safety in the things of this world, and in myself.

I’ve chosen to place my confidence and trust in His plan, no matter what I may face. And even though I may find myself looking up at the face of some pretty big waves every now and then, I know He will direct my path, and give me the wisdom and discernment to paddle on through. (Prov. 3:5-7; Jas. 1:5)

I want to encourage you today, to trust God in every situation. Always lean upon His Word to guide you, and never be wise in your own ways. If God is calling you to paddle out to deeper waters in your faith and relationship with Him, then make the decision to commit to move forward, rather than turning back to what you perceive to be safer.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Corinthians 3:11, where should we find the solid ground and foundation of our lives?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What do you find yourself placing faith in? Is it completely in God first and foremost, or do you find yourself placing a great amount of faith in your support system, such as your job, possessions, or other people?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Allow God to lead you to His deeper waters, so you can be strengthened in your faith and trust in Him.

LET’S PRAY: Father, help me to get past the shore-breakers of shallow faith today. Help me to fix my mind on You so I can experience what it is You have intended for my life by way of my Christian walk. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
