The Finger of God

The magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said. Exodus 8:19 (NIV)

Some years ago a movie by the name of Twister came out depicting a team of people recklessly chasing tornados across the Midwest. They would estimate where they thought funnel clouds would form by their knowledge of weather patterns. Each tornado hitting the ground is given a number of 1 to 5 on what was known as the Fujita scale. This scale would measure the power of the tornado by the velocity of the wind created within it — the greater the number, the greater the velocity. I remember the lead actor being asked the question, “What is an F-5 like?”  His face revealed his emotions of both respect and fear, as he answered, “It’s like the finger of God!”

This statement really had an impact on me as to the type of power generated by this size of tornado. I would say Hollywood got this one right, because it really is a small sample of the power of God.

We can actually see this very statement, The finger of God used within the Old Testament. When Pharaoh decided to have his magician’s attempt to duplicate God’s fourth plague upon Egypt. Their response was, “This is the finger of God.”  These men — who were instruments for Satan — knew they were no match for God, and they could not duplicate what He did.

Again in Exodus 31:18 we see the Finger of God — this time cutting out the Ten Commandments in stone to guide the lives of His people. And we see this same power and strength of God spoken of in the Book of Luke. In this passage we can clearly see Jesus acknowledging the power contained within the finger of God.

But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. Luke 11:20 (NKJV)

No power can be equal with the finger of God. Satan is no match for this power, and yet God has used it to grace and love mankind by it throughout history, including sending His only begotten Son to be crucified upon the cross of Calvary for our sin.

It’s truly amazing to me how God uses this very power to love us (John 3:16), to heal us (Isa. 53:5; Mk. 7:33-36), and to protect us, as seen here in Jesus’ model prayer (Matt. 6:13).

And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.  For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen Matthew 6:13 (NKJV)

Q: What does the finger of God mean to us today?

The finger of God is either the tip of an outstretched hand wanting to receive us, or it will be the very thing pointing out judgment of those who deny His Son and His free gift of salvation. We just need to reach out and grab it and receive God’s free gift of eternal life.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 6:13, what two things can we clearly see God’s power helping us with today?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you tapping into the power of God to overcome the enemy’s temptations within your life?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:  Never forget — The finger of God is attached to the loving hand of the Father. He cares more than you can fully comprehend. Hold tight to it and allow it to deliver you from all evil today.

PRAYER: Father, I want to thank You for Your loving hand upon my life. I acknowledge Your power and grace and I choose to submit my life to Your will. Utilize me to share the gospel message with others. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
