Choosing Wisely

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess... I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live…” Deuteronomy 30:15-16,19 (NKJV)

We make all sorts of choices throughout our lives. These choices are sometimes simple, while there are others more complicated. Each choice we make is our answer to a specific question – questions such as—

· What am I going to wear today?

· What shall I eat for breakfast?

· What car should I consider to buy?

· What career will I choose?

· Do I believe in God?

· Do I love God, and show my love by my obedience?

· Will I follow, serve and worship God first and foremost, or will I choose to follow, serve and worship a false god?

You may not think you have ever contemplated this last question, but we are all being tempted continuously to serve false gods. I want to be clear here, there is only one true living God; the rest are false, dead gods (emphasis on the lower case “g”).

Q: So what constitutes a false god?

Whatever is your greatest passion, whatever you spend most of your free time serving, doing, or building. Whatever gives you the greatest pleasure; these usually are the things that make-up false gods. These activities, objects, and people aren’t necessarily bad, but when they carry a higher priority in our heart than seeking, loving, and serving God, then they have taken His rightful place in our lives, and they will usually slowly begin to choke out His Word. Jesus spoke of this.

Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. Mark 4:18-19 (NKJV)

God has given each of us freewill, including the freedom to choose whether we will love Him and accept His free gift of eternal life through Jesus (John 3:16; Rom. 10:9-10; Eph. 2:8-9). Satan knows this and is vying for our vote by tempting us to fall in love with the things of this world instead. Satan tempts and deceives us, hoping we will find satisfaction and self worth in our activities and possessions. Satan is a liar and a thief; he rips us off from God’s truth, and the true life only found in Jesus.

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10 (NKJV)

Our choices may have a temporary impact on our life here on earth, but they can also have an eternal impact. It is important for us to pause and carefully consider as we make our choices (Acts. 16:31; Rom. 10:9-10; 2 Cor. 7:10; 1 John 1:9). God’s grace is abundant, as is His heart to forgive us.

Here’s the deal—God wants to have a personal relationship with each of us, and He desires for us to freely choose this as well. It’s a choice of eternal life, or eternal death. Choose Life!

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 10:10, why did Jesus come to this earth?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there anything in your life holding a greater priority than your relationship with Jesus?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Look carefully at your choices, and choose to run every decision you are contemplating through a screening process – Is this drawing me closer to God? Is what I am contemplating going to have a greater place in my heart than God?

PRAYER: Father, we love You and I need You to help me to make proper choices today. Help us to see the impact our choices will have on our lives and the lives of those whom we love. Give us the strength and the wisdom to properly choose in every situation. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
