Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, Acts 19:11 (NKJV)

In Acts 19:11 we read how God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul. When I read this, I can’t help but have a visual of these things God was choosing to do through the Apostle Paul. People were being healed of sicknesses, and the demons were being purged from those who were possessed. And this was being done as handkerchiefs or aprons Paul had personally used were being brought to those who were sick (v. 12).

God chose to do unusual miracles at this time, and He chose to do them through the Apostle Paul. We saw this same thing in Acts 5 where people where healed as Peter’s shadow passed by and covered them. I don’t believe these miracles were to bring Peter or Paul glory, but they were accomplished to draw the people to a relationship with Jesus—the very person Peter and Paul preached, and the true source of all healing.

Q: So what was so special about the shadow of Peter or these physical items of Paul’s?

I don’t believe it was so much about the items or the people, as it was the faith of those who received them. These people believed they would be healed through the use of these items and their faith was released, as they believed without doubting. And God chose to use these items for this particular time.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; James 1:6-7 (NKJV)

I think it’s essential to remember, it is God who ultimately is the One who heals us—it is never a person or sacred item. All too often people have tried to give credit to someone, some diet, or a sacred item, such as a holy cloth, or even a cross, and in doing so they have mistakenly worshiped it instead of the One who died upon the cross. We need to make sure we don’t get caught up into any manmade schemes or marketing ploys seeking to capitalize on so-called, “Holy objects” or special programs to heal us. We must always worship and seek the Lord, and His healing power through prayer in Jesus’ name.

I want to encourage you to seek the Lord in prayer for every good thing needed in your life. Know it will be given in God’s perfect timing if it is His will (1 John 5:14-15). Hey, if God chooses to do an unusual miracle then great, but remember your steadfast faith in God’s ability to do miracles should be your main focus. He is the origin of your faith, the One who ultimately heals, and the One who has the power to answer prayer. Your faith in Him will always be the point of release of His great power.

STUDY QUESTION: What emphasis is put on our faith in James 1:6-7?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you believe in God’s ability and willingness to answer every prayer you make according to His will?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Place your faith in God’s perfect plan and His will, and derive your peace knowing He is in control.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your blessing in my life by giving me the faith to believe. Father, I choose to believe in Your perfect plan for my life today, and I ask for Your will to be done in every aspect. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
