Worshiping Lesser gods
10/19/2016

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV)

I was in a parking lot one day, when I noticed this one particular car had quite a few stickers on it.  Most of the stickers were promoting variations of peace, including anti-war and classic peace logo variations.  On the back of the car were two stickers on opposite sides of the trunk lid.  One sticker read, “Mother Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth.”  And the second sticker read, “Honor Mother Earth.”

As I thought about these statements, I realized that I do have a great appreciation and respect for what God has so graciously given to us, in the way of this great and amazing planet.  In fact, every time I go out exploring I get to see just a little bit more, and I appreciate it more and more.  I do believe we are to be good stewards of God’s creation, but I haven’t started to worship this planet yet, nor am I going to start to refer to it as “Mother Earth.”

The fact is, when we worship anything other than God, whether it’s this earth or anything else, we have made it a false god and it is idolatry.  Pretty much anything we have a passion for can quickly turn into an obsession and an unhealthy worship of an idol. I call these things, “Lower case ‘g’ gods.”

“You shall have no other gods before Me.  “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, Exodus 20:3-5 (NKJV)

There is another thing I disagree with on these stickers — I don’t belong to “Mother earth”  — I belong to God.  And, as long as I honor God, then I will have no problem being a good steward of what He has given to me – and this includes this great and vast planet known as Earth.  So for me, to honor or respect the earth is a byproduct of honoring and respecting God.

The next time you see something that blows your mind, such as the beauty of a flower unfolding in the morning light, or the sun sinking into the ocean at dusk — know there is something bigger to be worshiped than what you are viewing —it is worshiping the Creator, not the creation. To worship anything other than the Creator God is to worship a lesser god.

There is one more thing I would like to encourage you with. If you love this planet and the things our Lord has created, then you are in for an unbelievable surprise one day.

But as it is written:  “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)

Just another reason to worship God…

STUDY QUESTION: According to Exodus 20:3-5, what can we learn with regard to worshiping anything other than God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there anything in your life that you are worshiping, or putting more emphasis into, or loving than God?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make it your heart's commitment to keep from putting more emphasis into anything above God.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for Your mercy, grace and love. Father, I am sorry for the times I have put a greater emphasis, time, energy, and love into other things rather than You.  I ask for forgiveness for this, and I ask for You to reveal to me anything I may have out of priority. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
