4 Essentials To Spiritual Growth - Part 2
7/19/2016

Attending Church

And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NKJV)

We are looking at a five part devotional series titled, Essentials to Spiritual Growth. In Part I of this series we looked at the first of four essential things I believe we need to implement into our lives if we are to mature and grow in our Christian walk. In Part 2, we are going to look at the next essential practice to foster our spiritual growth, which is:

2.    We should be attending church services regularly

Before we get into the reasons as to why we should be in church, I want to clarify; “The Church” is not any particular set of four walls in any one particular town, state, or country. The Church is actually the body of believers—all those who have made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Messiah, and it covers many diverse countries, cultures and ethnicities throughout the world. We as a body of believers make up one Spirit, and we serve One Lord, through one faith (Eph. 4:1)—we are one flock, but many sheepfolds (cf. John 10:16).

So when I talk about attending church, I am simply speaking of meeting at a place of worship with the body of believers-our fellow Christian brothers and sisters.

We have actually been called into a relationship with God once we became Christians (See 1 Cor 1:9), and the New Testament never separates Christian believers into groups of "church members" and "non-church members." It is clearly noted throughout the scriptures that everyone participates in their local assembly.

I like what Alan Stibbs said in his book entitled, "God's Church." He said, "Any Idea...of enjoying salvation or being a Christian in isolation is foreign to the New Testament writings."(1)

We can clearly see within scripture, early Christian converts would meet regularly (cf. Acts 20:7). Every time the apostle Paul would go to a new city and win new converts, the first thing he would do is organize them into a new local church. There are many things that could not be done if we were not participating in our local church, such as using our spiritual gifts to strengthen, help and build one another up (1 Pet. 4:10; 1 Thess. 5:11), and to have a healthy accountability.

I want to encourage you to make church attendance a priority in your life.

STUDY QUESTION: What does Hebrews 10:24-25 tell us about gathering at church?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you attending a local church that teaches the Bible verse-by-verse?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make gathering at church services and Bible studies a priority in your life. God wants to do something in other people's lives through each of us, and it very well might be He wants to do something in your life through them as well.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY:  Father, thank You for teaching me about the essentials of Spiritual growth. Help me to continue to apply these essentials. In Jesus’ precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
