To Have A Servant's Heart - Part 7
7/13/2016

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:13 (NKJV)

We have been looking at a series of devotionals titled, To Have A Servant's Heart. In this series we have been looking at what it means to have a proper servant's heart as defined by God. We’ve learned we cannot properly serve others in the way our Lord demonstrated without first having this type of heart. So we are looking at eight qualities we are to put on, as outlined in Colossians 3:12-14—qualities we must possess before we can properly serve others in His name.

Let’s take a look at the eighth and most important quality we must, “put on.”

8.   We are to put on love

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:14 (NKJV)

Without “love” we cannot effectively put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, nor could we bear with, or forgive one another. And without love we will never really enjoy the type of fellowship or impact that God intended us to have with others. In fact, if we wanted to sum up every single virtue we have discussed thus far within this series of devotionals we could simply say, “LOVE ONE ANOTHER!”

This is exactly what Jesus demonstrated when He was here on earth, and it is the same thing He commanded us to do when He gave us the Commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). All service in the name of God must flow from Love—for God is love.  This love is not the type of love we can manifest on our own—it only comes from God, and it is called Agape Love. Agape love is a supernatural love that is from God. Every believer can possess it, but they must choose to “agape” another person. When we agape another person, our love is now centered on the needs and the well being of that person. When we truly agape another, we will pay whatever price we have to pay to meet their needs and to care for them.

The apostle Paul summed up how important agape love is to us as Christian men or women, when he said, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)

The best example of agape love we have been given is God allowing Jesus to pay the ultimate price so we might be reconciled unto Him.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (NKJV)

The Bible teaches this type of love to be the supreme virtue of disciples of Jesus Christ. Its origin is of God because God is love. So we are to abide in Him and His love, and we are given the promise that He and His love will abide in us (1 John 4:16). I think we need to look at God’s love as the water of life, and ourselves as a garden hose—now simply allow God to point the hose where He wishes and let His love flow upon others.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to love?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you allowing God’s love to flow through you to others?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Ask God to share His love with others through you. Don’t quench the Holy Spirit by not allowing God to love others through you.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for Your love. Lord I would like for You to love others through me today. Help me to see others in the way You do Lord, and give me an agape love for them. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
