You Must Keep Moving

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Prov. 3:5-6 (NKJV)

I remember when I was a child and was just learning to ride a bicycle. It took confidence to learn, and it would mean mustering up enough speed to keep my balance. To stop would result in a loss of balance and an eventual hard fall. Actually our Christian walk is much like learning to ride a bicycle—you need to keep moving forward, lest you fall hard.

I remember being apprehensive about continuing to ride when I initially encountered obstacles or things causing fear, worry and doubt, and I would be tempted to stop altogether. Many times I would put my feet down in an attempt to protect myself from falling.

I think the same thing happens in our Christian walk, as some obstacles can appear to be dangerous or intimidating, and anxiety and fear can quickly replace our confidence. When this happens, we often stop moving forward and we begin to drag our feet instead of doing what we need to be doing to keep our balance. But it should not be this way. We need to place our confidence in Christ’s ability to guide us through everything, and continue to move forward in doing what we know to be right.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 1 Corinthians 13:11 (NKJV)

If we are to continue to keep moving forward it will be imperative for us to place our confidence in God alone. Failure to seek God for His Wisdom and to continue to walk in His ways when facing trials and tribulation will inevitably end in a needless fall, whereas we will stay safe if we listen and obey. This is exactly what Proverbs speaks about.

But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.” Proverbs 1:33 (NKJV)

Maybe Albert Einstein knew what he was talking about when he stated, “Life is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving."

I want to encourage you to keep moving in your walk with God. We will always need both support and freedom, much like the child who is learning to ride, but the ride is what it is all about, and the Lord will always be there to keep us safe.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Proverbs 3:5-6, what should we be doing when we are tempted to stop moving forward because of fear, worry, and doubt?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you moving forward in your Christian walk, or are you finding yourself dragging your feet?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Keep from dragging your feet when you face difficulties—instead, seek the Lord and His Wisdom and continue to move forward through the valleys with God.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for being there for me with the perfect combination of support and freedom. Help me to remember these truths when I am tempted to drag my feet in the face of trials. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
