Wash Me Thoroughly
4/25/2016

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)

I always get a smile when I see a new laundry detergent claiming to be the best way to remove the dirt and grime in my clothes. Each passing year a new version comes out, and claims to be the best and most effective way to alleviate stains. I often wonder how many people switch from what they are using and try the new stuff.

I am so thankful God doesn’t market salvation with pretty packaging or smelly fragrances to lure us into buying into a saving relationship with Jesus. God sent His Son to love us, serve us, and to die for us. I’m happy He doesn’t give us 20 different ways in which we can be cleansed of our sin either. In fact, He gives us just one way—confessing our sin, repenting of it, and placing our faith in Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. I know this can frustrate many people who believe their way to be saved is the only way. But the fact remains; the Bible clearly teaches that it is ONLY through the blood of Jesus that we will be cleansed of our sin.

…knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 1 Peter 1:18-19 (NKJV)

This is why I love the lyrics to the old hymnal Nothing but the blood of Jesus by Robert Lowry from back in the late 1800’s. I think it lays out the antidote to our sin so simply.

What can wash away my sin?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

What can make me whole again?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

I thank God that He is willing to cleanse each of us from our sins, and for allowing His only begotten Son to shed His blood to do this. I have no problem saying those same words as King David who wrote:

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. Psalms 51:2 (NKJV)

I think it is vitally important for us to always remember this fundamental Christian truth, because the enemy is subtly attacking the foundational truths God gave us in His Word—he does this through false teachings and feel-good preaching. There is only one provision for us to be white as snow with regard to our transgressions—it is through our faith in Jesus, and by His death upon the cross. Nothing else can save us and make us whole —nothing but the blood of Jesus. Without it, there is no cleansing.

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regard to our being cleansed by the blood of Christ?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Can you say as David did, “Lord, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin?"

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: When the enemy fires a thought into your head, claiming you are not worthy of being saved, or that you haven’t done enough—then read these scriptures again. Christ’s death was enough to pay the penalty for every sin you have committed. Simply repent of your sin and walk in newness of life.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for allowing Your Son to die on the cross of Calvary for me. I accept His sacrifice for my sin, and I accept Him as my personal Lord and Savior. Father, help us to see things the way You do today. Continue to transform me as I renew my mind by reading Your Word. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
