An Unhealthy Consumerism
4/7/2016

Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psa. 37:4 (NKJV)

It should be no shock to any of us to realize our world is being inundated with new technology each and every passing day. Things we grew up believing to be radical concepts have come to fruition and are being introduced into our daily way of living, and are now the very things our children and grandchildren consider being normal.

This new technology is truly amazing, and is being used for great achievements from medicine to entertainment, and everything in between, but it is also being exploited by Satan to bombard our very minds. Our brains are being overloaded with graphic images, and advertisements—many of these share the common goal of enticing us to consume more. It’s called consumerism and it is the foundational goal of our very economy here in America.  Let’s face it, if we stop buying then businesses cease to profit and employees are laid off.

Consumption is going to be a part of every one of our lives, and in and of itself is not the problem. The problem begins when we have an unbalanced and unhealthy appetite for consuming, and when the things we are consuming are having a detrimental affect on our physical and spiritual lives.

It is no secret that Satan is continually attempting to destroy our spiritual and physical lives (1 Pet. 5:8), so he will use the things of this world to capture our attention—knowing if our mind is consumed with these things, it cannot be consumed with the things of God. Once our mind is consumed with these temporary treasures, they will soon find their way to our heart, and they will be given the place that rightfully belongs to Jesus (cf. Matt. 6:21).

Q:     So how do we guard our minds and hearts from being deceived with the things of this world?

I have found the greatest way to overcome any passion is with another passion. By making Jesus our delight, and developing a passion for impacting this world so others might know Him.  As we continue to read our Bibles our minds are being washed with the water of His word (cf. Eph. 5:26), and the filth and temptations are being exposed for what they truly are—lies from the father of lies (John 8:44).

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Psalm 37:4, how can we truly find the desires of our heart?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What are the desires of your heart today?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make a list of the things you truly desire right now in your life, both spiritually, and physically. Give a greater emphasis on the spiritual and see how the physical list begins to change.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for guiding me in my Christian walk, and for reminding me to take caution of what I give my heart over to. Help me to see things in the way You want me to see them, and reveal any lies of the enemy so I can see them clearly.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
