We Must Test All Things

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 (NKJV)

One of the things I find continually blessing me at Wildwood Calvary Chapel in Yucaipa is the many unique gifts God has graciously given to each of the people serving there for the benefit of the entire body. Each person is uniquely different, and yet all of them have many things in common, such as their love for Jesus, and a heart to serve others. What blesses me greatly is when I see each of their gifts being used in a selfless and humble way—one honoring to God, and reflective of how Jesus lived.

As we go through 1 Corinthians 12:10, we can see many of these gifts outlined that God will give for the benefit of the entire church body—one being the gift of discerning spirits. Now discerning of spirits can be defined as supernatural insight in the realm of the spirit. It is the ability to tell the difference of the things of the Holy Spirit, and those that are not (cf. Acts 8:18-23; 16:16-18).

Test all things; hold fast what is good. 1 Thess. 5:21 (NKJV)

This is an important gift for us to have as followers of Jesus Christ, because we are told Satan appears as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and he and his emissaries will do everything they can to distort the truth of God’s word, and attempt to deceive as many as possible within the church. Jude wrote to warn believers about these lying spirits when he spoke about the ungodly men who had crept into the church unnoticed, and who turned the grace of God into lewdness, and they denied Jesus Christ (Jude 4). Peter also warned how Satan would attempt to infiltrate the church with false prophets and teachers whom by the way of truth would be blasphemed (2 Peter 2:1-2).

Thankfully, God has helped us by pledging to never leave us alone as orphans. Instead, He has given us the Spirit of truth to dwell with us, and to live inside us (John 14:16-17)—He will teach us God’s truth, and will also remind us of the things Jesus has taught us (John 14:26). Since we now know not every spirit is of God (1 John 4:1), our responsibility is to rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15) so we can test all things and cling to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

I want to encourage you to prayerfully think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 John 4:1, why is it important for us to test all things, and to rightly divide the truth, when it comes to God’s word being prophesied (taught) to us?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you seeking the Lord for His discernment?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to always seek the Lord for discernment and be sure to open your Bible and study so you will know His truth.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for giving me Your word of truth. Help me to know it, understand it, and to use it to combat the lies of the evil one. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
